Mesa went into the game with one loss and would have had to beat the 'Birds twice to win the title. To top things off, Mesa had to win a 20 inning marathon encounter with Highlands to reach the final showdown. The waiting seemed to hurt SU more than the lve and one half hour game tired Mesa'. The Mavericks jumped out in front 4-0, collecting runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. It looked like a second game was in the offing when things began to click for Southern Utah. Mesa pitcher Johnson began to tire and Mark Johnson Game two, against a tough Regis ballclub was a free-swinging affair. 20 hits were collected in the game with Anthony Giron, Mark Johnson and Jerry Crum each collecting round-trippers for the 'Birds. Darren Garrick relieved Don Gubler to pick up the victory. Scott Bergerhouse went the distance against a formidable New Mexico Highlands squad to lead SU to the win in game number three. Bergerhouse has come on strong for SUSC during the latter part of the season and been a key to the Thunderbird's success. Again, Dumont and Curt Peterson collected two hits to pace the Southern Utah attack. f blasted a solo seventh-inning seventh-inning homer. In the eighth, the roof fell in on n Mesa. By MIKE CANNON I Record Reporter Southern Utah State College put the skeptics, critics and fellow RMAC teams to shame by winning win-ning the conference 3 tournament last weekend in Cedar City. ! The T-Birds clawed their way through four I games to capture the three-day tournament, taking two lopsided and I two tough wins from I conference opponents. Game one saw SUSC's Kevin Donner hurl an impressive no-hitter. 1 Donner recorded 10 j strikeouts as he blew down the Western New Mexico lineup through six innings. Jeff Dumont and Pat Kilgore each collected two hits to pace the nine-hit Thunderbird attack. I A Southern Utah State College player is off and running after laying down a pretty bunt. SU used a potent offense and clutch pitching to down four RMAC opponents in conference tournament play. SUSC centerfielder Jerry Crum attempts to score , during tournament play.
