Show Just Between You And Me wnlo Now that we've got the Memorial Day Holiday weekend week-end over, we can concentrate on the opening weekend of fishing. From all reports, Minersville Reservoir will be packed, with good fishing in store. With the high gas prices, there may be more plunkers than trollers this year. 0 - Recent reports indicate that the gas lines are shortening shor-tening in California. Does this mean that the problem is easing up, or that everyone every-one has finally got their bottles, jugs, and cans full, and stored in auto trunk, garage or basement? - 0 -During the crisis of '73- 74 there was a rush to put in private gas pumps and storage tanks. Naturally, filling all those tanks added to the squeeze. It may insulate in-sulate you a little against your neighbor, but in the long run, it catches up. Besides being very dangerous, dan-gerous, particularly for those who carry spare gas in the trunk of their car, or store it in the basement, it likely won't help much in the long run. It reminds me of the little old lady who got caught with a ton of wormy sugar on V-J Day, after World War II. - 0 - But to the lighter side, while all the candidates are announcing or denying their candidacy for the 1980 presidential presi-dential race, we should remind re-mind you that municipal elections will be held this fall. It's time now to be thinking about candidates for local city offices. 0 - It's interesting work, if you can get it. Monday, slaving away at the office when Daisy Rowley stopped to tell us a hot air balloon had come down near the Woods -Eyre cattle camp on U-21 in Pine Valley. Figuring they'd be packed up and gone before we could navigate the fifty miles, we decided it was still worth the effort to see what was going on. So the old Redhead loaded up Marion Walker, Carol and Marion's dogs, and took off in search of the balloon. - 0 -Topping the Wah Wah Range we scanned the desert with no success, and proceeded pro-ceeded to the Woods Eyre camp. A quick search was fruitless, so we drove to the Desert Range Experiment Station, hoping someone had seen something, or the bal-loonists bal-loonists had gone there to use the phone. Not only had they not seen a balloon, but the phone was out of order. It looked as if our first hunch had been right, either the ballonists had taken off again, or had been picked up by a chase vehicle, and we'd missed them. We returned to the Wood and Eyre camp and searched once again, still spotting nothing. - 0 Just as we returned to the highway we hesitated, giving one last look over the valley. val-ley. Carolspottedsomething yellow on the road down the ley. Carol spotted something some-thing yellow on the road down the middle of the valley. val-ley. About to dismiss it as a piece of farm equipment, the old Redhead caught a flicker of light along with the yellow object. We negotiated the washed out road and headed for that yellow spot, finding Joe Kit -tenger carrying a water jug and limping up the road. The sun reflecting from the water jug two miles away had spurred spur-red us on. - 0 -Kittenger explained that he was a ballonist, and he and his partner, Dewey Reln-hard, Reln-hard, were in an International Inter-national Balloon Race, and had left the Queen Mary parking lot in Long Beach, California, Sunday. They had used all their ballast and the heavy winds forced them to bring the balloon down, afraid to try their luck on the mountain ranges ahead. He reported Reinhard had hurt his back during the landing, land-ing, and Joe was limping with an injured ankle. He asked for help. We took off down the road another mile, where Reinhard was standing stand-ing at the gondola, about 500 yards from the road. We helped them transfer (Continued on Page 2) i.ipiTint:. It's interesting work, when you can get it, and so we'll leave the ballooning to Joe and Dewey. HERE'S MORE ABOUT Just Between some of their gear to the car, and brought them to the Milford Valley Memorial Hospital for x-rays and treatment. 0 -We learned that Reinhard had attempted a balloon crossing of the Atlantic in 1977, and nearly made it, coming down off the coast of Nova Scotia. Kittenger, we learned, held the high altitude bailout record, of 103,000 feet, over New Mexico, with a four and a half minute free fall. He's the only human to reach supersonic speeds without an airplane. - 0 - The International Race hasn't been held since 1938 when Poland won. Eighteen countries were entered with 34 balloons taking off from Long Beach. Kittenger and Reinhard were one of four teams representing the U.S. The winner is to host the annual race, but In 1938, Hitler interferred, so the U.S. hosted this year to get the race going once more. The balloonists were released re-leased from the hospital, with no serious injuries, and returned, with their ground crew, who had made it almost al-most to Provo, Tuesday, for the balloon and gondola, after spending Monday night in Milford. They will npwhead home, Kittenger to Orlando, Florida, and Reinhard to his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. - 0 - And so It is with news- |
