Show M I : Hope you've got the ballot figured out so that you won't be confused next Tuesday. It's about the biggest big-gest mess we've seen. Not the biggest though! That would have to go to the campaign finance law. We're sure that the do- ! i gooders who drewandpass- - I ed this law had good in- ' j tentions. But those inten- j tions were misguided. -0- The campaign finance , 1 law has little effect on local lo-cal candidates because most of their campaigning campaign-ing expense is wear and tear on their hands and feet. Shoe leather has had its share of inflation, but it's still cheap compared to chartered jets. -0- The presidential candidates candi-dates aren't hampered too j badly. They seem to be able to raise all they can spend and spend all they want. ! i ' It's the candidates for I : state offices and U. S. Con- i gressional offices that are t handicapped. In Utah j; they've got a lot of ground J to cover and not much pop- ulation. 1 How much campaign funds they're allowed is based on population not territory represented. Many midwestern and eastern states aren't much bigger than some Utah counties. But they contain several times the population. popula-tion. This means that those I candidates could often walk from one meeting to an- ! other, while in Utah it often j means driving for one or , ! two hours or hopping a ' chartered plane to anoth- : er corner of the state. j Sometimes distances of 400-700 miles. ! -0- . It's logical then for them to use mediums of advertising adver-tising which have statewide coverage, such as tv. Un- j fortunately this is also the i j most expensive, and works f f against the candidate, in that he soon has spent all the money he's allowed, and still hasnt been able 1 to meet only a small per- I centage of the constituents. -0- ) The situation was brought i home this past week when some local folks wanted to show their support to a state candidate. He couldn't allow it because he already had all the money he was allowed to spend allocated. They wrestled with the problem for most of a week, trying to find a way around the campaign finance law j and finally decided to ' take the money and have a party not for the candi- ; date but for themselves. -0- . So, if you find yourself nearing the polls this year still undecided on the candidates blame it, at least in part, on the stupid campaign finance law. Even though we get ten times more press releases releas-es than we use, and even though we read every weekly week-ly newspaper, both of the SLC dailies, and listen to radio and tv, we don't feel confident that we really know the candidates this year. -0- ; The onlycandidatewefeel we can wholeheartedly endorse en-dorse this year is Orrin Hatch. Our confidence that he is the man for the job is more due to our search- ; ing him out, than his reaching reach-ing out to us. ; Hatch will compliment Garn in the Senate. His con - servative views align with our own. We find him re- freshing, in that he thinks ) on his feet. He is unafraid ; to speak his opinions. He 1 does not hedge or put off questions. Unlike his op- j ponent, his campaign has J kept a high plane, devoid ! of personalities. We don't know how long it I w ill last. Washington, D .C . ! has a way of compromising I even the most uncomprom - !! lsing. But until this hap- ! pens .Utah cannot afford ' 'j to send anyone but Hatch ,j to fight its battles in j Washington. ' ! -0- The deer hunt has been a bust so far. We haven't 1 even talked to anyone who (Continued on Page 2) j HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN actually got his buck. We've heard of only a very few. We used to be swamped swamp-ed with calls for pictures of the huge racks. The last two years, not a call. We didn't even clean the rifle. Bought our license last spring for the fishing opener. $18.00 to get blown off the lake Memorial Day. We may have second thoughts next year. -0- For those of you who are a bit turned off with the deer hunt you may want to lend your support to the Moab Sportsman C lub. They not only refused to hunt the La Sals them selves but put on a huge publicity campaign to keep hunters from killing the few deer left. They plan to approach the legislature in January about a closed season to allow the deer herd to build back up. -0- Halloween falls on Sunday, Sun-day, so guess the witches and goblins will be out early on Saturday. Didnt get our usual trick or treat picture pic-ture this year. If you know of a couple of cute costumes cos-tumes before they are covered cov-ered with popcorn balls and chocolate give the ol' Redhead a call. Pre-school only. The Beavers will be the lone representative from Beaver County in the quarter-finals Friday. They play Altamont at Provo. They, with Coach Al Marshall, Mar-shall, will be shooting for their fifth championship in eight years. Good Luck Beavers! |
