Mrs. James A. Thomas, Council president, presented the argument for severing affiliation andMrs. Charles Orrett, vice-president of the Council presented present-ed the case for retaining association. as-sociation. A lengthy question ques-tion and answer perid followed fol-lowed the presentation of the executive comm ittee recom -mendation for severance and considerable discussion followed fol-lowed the motion to disassociate; disas-sociate; the vote was 10 to 2 in favor of dissolving the affiliation. Reasons cited were PTA support of planned parenthood, sex-education in the schools, abortion, early childhood education, the Family and Child Services Act and other causes past and present which members felt conflicted with their religious re-ligious and moral standards. In attendance were presidents pres-idents of each Garfield County Coun-ty PTA and their two voting vot-ing delegates; representing , Bryce Valley School was new principal, Mr. Henry Jolley. In its report to the Council, the Executive Committee noted that activities at the Council level last year included in-cluded assistance in registering reg-istering each local unit's bylaws by-laws and the drawing up and registering of the Council by-laws in addition to general gen-eral organization of the Council. Coun-cil. The Committee heard a report from each unit president pres-ident on the activities of the past year along with tentative tenta-tive plans for the new year. In other business, anominat-ing anominat-ing committee was selected to nominate officers for next year's Council which will function independently of the National and State organizations organiza-tions and strive to serve the local units by supplying them with information relative to education legislation on the state and national levels and by making available workshops work-shops on teaching phonics and help for teacher aides. A recommendation by the Executive Committee Suggested Sug-gested that each local unit have as a member of its board a representative to attend at-tend school board meetings each month and report back to the general membership. PTA, it was felt, had failed fail-ed to keep its membership abreast of the really significant sig-nificant issues in education and all parents need to be fully informed about all legislation leg-islation relative to education. The opinion was expressed that comm unity activities should be less centered around the schools and more centered around the home and church; the PTA Community Involvement Program tends to cir-1 cumvent and undermine existing ex-isting structures of school and city government by providing pro-viding for an overriding organization or-ganization which usurp authority au-thority from existing governing gov-erning bodies. |
