Show Guarded optimism on pcr!is Senator Jake Gam today expressed "guarded optimism" op-timism" concerning President Presi-dent Ford's proposal for expanding ex-panding and Improving the nation's parks. He said he "welcomes with open arms" the plan to provide funds for upgrading and staffing existing exist-ing parks but is apprehensive apprehen-sive about the addition of significant amounts of land to the park system. "The President's goal to increase opportunities for outdoor recreation is a worthy one," said Senator Gam, "but I seriously question ques-tion the advisability of taking tak-ing more land out of multiple use. Wa have experienced it in Utah, especially in Southern Utah." "However, the proposal to appropriate funds for the upgrading of present parks and refuges is highly commendable com-mendable and has my wholehearted whole-hearted support. There are several facilities in Utah which need attention and which are included in the President's plan." Gam said the plan calls for no additional Utah lands to be included in the national park system. The proposed program contains funds for exit ing facilities. |
