Show , We need to thank the many subscribers who send us clippings from all over the world. Even though we read constantly, con-stantly, when w 're not busy with some other job, it's im -possible for us to cover every publication. Your clippings clip-pings of items of local in- terest, therefore, make it j possible for us to cover a ' much wider territory. ' We are always interested j in reading articles dealing j with Beaver County and Southern Utah. We do not, however, have the space to j repeat all of them, and many are copyrighted. We do, however, file those j of interest for future refer- t ence. There is seldom time to acknowledge those clippings clip-pings we do not quote, use, or otherwise distribute. j; This, then is Intended to be a "thank you" for all of the many clippings that have been sent to us and not acknowledged. ac-knowledged. And as the old radio evangelists evan-gelists used to say, "Keep those cards and letters com - ' j ing folks!" -0- We feel it's also necessary neces-sary to explainwhyour stories stor-ies do not necessarily jib with other publishers. For instance, the story by ) Mr. Robert S. Halliday in Monday's Tribune indicated that construction of the Alu-met Alu-met project would start in six months. j Actually, Alumet hopes to 1 have the kinks worked out of the process at the pilot plant j in six months. The project Itself will be held up until that time to complete the ! E.I.S. (environmental Impact Im-pact statement), which will be written by' a BLM team ! i in Cedar City,?which to date ,jj is still short pt personnel. I I; -C- For these reasons, the soonest poss-ljle start of construction r.u'd be some- ! ., time in 1977. A'ny further ij delays, whlfth are likely will j push that date back even ! ; farther. Many other so-called facts j and figures were included in ! this story and the Spectrum's ! geothermal story. A few are I correct, but most are incor- !;! rect. i -0- This reminds me of the j editor who approached his ;( reporter and told her, "Your !' story is both good and bad." V "The good is that all the facts and figures you quoted gave the story real dimension dimen-sion and strength. Unfortu-nately Unfortu-nately the bad Is that all those j ! facts and figures are untrue." un-true." -0- j These reporters are after ' a one -shot story and have no conscience as to the dam - ' age they can cause. j Last year an Earth Science j story that was carried by the Associated Press brought nearly a thousand letters from persons wanting Jobs. This at a time when Essex j was closing and many of our ; own people were without a job. At first the COUNTY j NEWS answered the letters ; at our own expense. The j Milford Business Ass'n. then carried the expense. The on- slaught of mail continued until ftnally the County Commission Com-mission and Milford City Council were approached to share the burden. Finally the mail died down. Some of this publicity cer- ! ! tainly Is good for Milford and i Beaver County. Soon Milford !; will have an identity of its A own and not be identified as l,j 200 miles south of Salt Lake !' City or 50 miles north of , Cedar City. , Some day we may need a ' thousand employees for Industry, In-dustry, but right now they , would add a burden that would take a bite out of every pocket pock-et in Beaver County. Schools and services for a 1,000 fam - j Hies without Jobs and tax base would be disastrous to our economy. With jobs and an adequate tax base, we would welcome the newcomers. newcom-ers. ! "- I. Where will Miss Bradley and Mr. Halliday be then? The COUNTY NEWS has i! many facts and figures, cer- tainly all that were published and more. But unless von can (Continued on Page 2) Ml HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN (Continued from Page One) convert them to megawatts, thousands of dollars in sales, or acres irrigated, they mean little to anybody except one of Phillips competitors. Quoting of a lot of high powered figures may make a story interesting, but it does not make it accurate or factual. However, if the figures are not accurate or factual, they make the story irresponsible. |
