" Clarence Corbridge's father fa-ther built the first brick homes in Minersvllle in the 1850's. Clarence now lives In the old home. The youngest of 17 children, Clarence has vrorked from the time he was small. "My mother was Relief Re-lief Society President," he recalled, "and It was my Job to take a wagon and collect Fast Offerings each month. Sometimes It would be a quart of fruit, a few eggs, grain or anything that could be added to the Bishop's storehouse." He and his older brother had the duty of chopping wood for the church furnace each Saturday night, and also keeping the widows supplied -with wood. Through the years Clarence Clar-ence has engaged In farming, farm-ing, mining and prospecting. "Mining is fascinating," he said. "I loved It." He worked work-ed at the Experimental Station Sta-tion In Pine Valley and then as a track man for the railroad rail-road for 24 years. One day during a terrible invasion of gnats, Clarence and his fellow R.R. workers had draped their bandanas around their hats to keep the pests from getting down their necks. A passenger train pulled into the station and a woman came to the platform. "What tribe of people are you?" she asked. "Oh, I guess we're about the same tribe as you are," someone some-one laughed. The woman was certain she had come across some exotic tribesmen in the midst of the Milford desert. Clarence and his wife, Wanda, have been married 53 years and are parents of four children. They have 20 grandchildren and twenty-seven twenty-seven great-grandchildren. "I've always loved my church work," said Clarence. Clar-ence. "I've been Sunday School Supt., Scoutmaster, and worked In geneology for many years." A heart attack caused his early retirement from the railroad and he began having time for some of his favorite hobbies. Gardening andHsh-Ing andHsh-Ing topped the list. "I love to fish." "He does," laughed Mrs. Corbrtdge, "and I've spent many a long, lonesome day while he's been fishing. I'd go with him, but I can't stand the mosquitos!" "I always liked to draw, but it wasn't until I retired that I took up painting. Then something In the paint began to bother my eyes and I had to give it up. "Well, I thought, if I can't paint with paint, I'll paint with thread. I draw . my own designs on the cloth Artist Clarence Corbridge with some paintings. and sometimes Invent my own stitches as I go along. I've made seven luncheon cloths and a number of embroidered em-broidered paintings. The rose cloth and peacock in the photo are embroidered. The basket of flowers is decou-page. decou-page. I didn't want to use stain and don't have a wood-burning wood-burning outfit, so I just laid the board on top of the stove until it burned the way I wanted It. wanted it." "My daughter showed me a loom she'd made to make a shag rug. I came home and made myself one and nowl'm working on a rug, too. "Clarence "Clar-ence also made a homemade loom to make lovely afghans. He is always working on something, whether it's his egg carton creations from wastebaskets to Christmas decorations, or his beautiful paintings and handwork. Not to be outdone, Mrs. Corbridge Cor-bridge enjoys handwork, too, and once won a blue ribbon at the State Fair for a pieced quilt. "I just wish I'd had more time when I was younger to do some of these things," remarked Clarence. But at least he's had a' 20-year head-start on Grandma Moses Mos-es - and his work is just great!
