A heavy vote was recorded Tuesday for an off year election elec-tion and only one slate of candidates. The extra heavy turnout was partly the result of write-in campaign, but there is evidence in the twenty-four names written writ-ten in that people were out to protest the single ticket. The Democratic ticket of Swain Whittaker and Hardy won with a large majority, but the number of write-ins recording record-ing only one or two votes is an indication that voters were not satisfied with the single ticket, and in the absence of someone else to vote for, wrote in their own name or the name o n iriend. The only organized campaign, cam-paign, and it came too late with, too little, was for Roy Young. The rest seemed to be just .names that were offered at the Democratic convention, and defeated, each pulling less than 100 votes. Four hundred seventeen voters vot-ers turned out Tuesday with 12 absentees in at that time, to give a total voter count of 429. The voting started slow with only 18 ballots cast at 9:00 a.m and 143 at noon. The big rush came after the funeral Tuesday afternoon and at quitting quit-ting time, 5-7 p.m. The tabulations are as follows: fol-lows: Enoch Swain 364 Gladys Whittaker 309 John R "Bus" Hardy 262 Roy Young 122 |
