Show A JOB WELL DONE! It's done and I'm glad! The zoning hearing in Beaver lias Friday night resulted in the approval of eight petitions on the south exit and one on the north being opened for development by the County Commissioners. And though the commission was afflicted by an onslaught of Beaver protestors on Monday, they held their ground, contending they had done what they believe was best for the whole county. This newspaper has been in the past, and is now, an advocate of this zoning. The arguments presented against this zoning so far as we were concerned have and continue to be ineffectual. Opponents have said : These big oil companies com-panies won't build, they just want to tie up the property so no one else can build. We do not believe this but if true, the county and Beaver city will be no worse off than before. They have said: Opening of the sites on the freeway free-way for development will kill Beaver City main street. We disagree, giant complexes on either edge of town, should Iboost an already sagging tourist-oriented economy, and the employees, manning the pumps, changing the beds, and serving that cup of coffee will be spending most of their paycheck right in Beaver City. Directly or indirectly helping every business and profession in the county. It's been said that huge corporations are not good citizens of the community. It's true that many of these large corporations are not overly concerned with the day to day struggle of the small town it may be sitting next to, with one of its places of business, but it's employees are concerned! They live here, they send their children to school here, and they call it home. They have to be as concerned as you and I are. They will be better citizens with a good steady paycheck. Commissioner Jefferson has been the stalwart in this decision from the beginning, and we congratulate him for having the foresight and determination to make this decision de-cision which could be the turning point in the progress and future of Beaver County. This decision could, and we believe will increase the tax base, give the needed spurt to the whole county that could get us off to a flying start, which could lead to the most prosperous years since the old Horn Silver was in its heydey. Commissioner Meyers is another story. Vendon was a lame duck commissioner, few would have cussed him long or considered him in a derrogatory way, had he taken the easy way out, passed the buck, and forced his successor to make this vital decsion. But Vendon Myers stood on his own two feet, he knew that a decision at this time was necessary to avoid taking the chance of losing these giant complexes. He knew what was best for all, and he made the motion which started the ball rolling. These two men have shown the stuff they are made of, they stuck to their guns in a difficult time. They fulfilled ful-filled the office which they were elected to, by serving the county as a whole. Our hat's off to both of you. |
