Show ADULTS OFFERED SPECIAL TRAI1NNG IN CIVIL DFENSE By Delbert Francom A continuing purpose in education edu-cation is to provide children and adults with the knowledge end skill they will need to live successfully, productively, and happily, and it presently seems that the education and skills i.eeded for successful, productive produc-tive and happy living are changing. As H. G. Wells so aptly states, "Human history ii? a race between education and survival." Modern man in the nuclear age now has the capability cap-ability to destroy himself, if not his entire civilizations. Current Cur-rent warfare Is such that civilian civil-ian populations are involved as never before in the history of the world; and as more nations secure destructive weapons, especially es-pecially nuclear, the chance for inhumane development of this energy is increased. While we may unequivocally hope that the engine of warfare will never be unleashed, it is the unquestionable responsibility of our schools; (1) To educate and train our children and adults for survival should either a nuclear or natural disaster occur; and (2) The schools have a current and increasing in-creasing responsibility to educate edu-cate and train our children and adults for every-day living in the nuclear age, Realizing that survival and day-to-day successful and full living depends ultimately upon the knowledge and action of individuals, in-dividuals, the Utah State Department De-partment of Public Instruction adopted and established the Civil Defense Adult Education Program. A very important phase of this program is the ' Personal and Family Survival Course" which is designed to develop an understanding of the role of the individual, family, fam-ily, and community in Civil Defense. The following expanded expand-ed topics represent the course content: (1) The need for-civtl defens, (2) The national civil defense program, (3) The nature na-ture and effects of nuclear warfare, (4) Principles of protection, pro-tection, (5) The national community com-munity shelter and warning program, (6) State and local civil defense plans and programs, pro-grams, (7) Home shelter construction, con-struction, (8) Community and home shelter living, (9) Family Fam-ily and individual planning for disaster, (10) Emergence from shelter, and (11) Survival on the farm.
