The shortage of RN's in this country is not of recent vintage. This has been an age old problem prob-lem to all small hospitals everywhere. every-where. Milford Valley Memorial Hospital is no exception. There has always been a need for RN's. Fifteen years ago the Medical ' Staff, the Governing Beard and the Administration of Milford Valley Memorial Hospital decided decid-ed to do something about it. After Aft-er many long meetings amongst themselves and other community leaders, they came up with one of the most unique methods in the State of Utah of trying to solve this problem; namely the Milford Valley Memorial Hospital Hospi-tal Nursng Scholarship Plan. I'm sure this idea is not new to many of you in this community, but since school has started, and many of our Seniors this year may still be undecided as to what their plans are after graduation, grad-uation, I would like to take this opportunity to refreshen your . thoughts about it. The Mlford Valley Memoral Hospital Nurses Scholarship Plan is open to any girl or boy that has completed their Senior year in high school . Although there isn't any restriction as to where the candidates reside, the selection selec-tion board gives preference to local applicants who qualify. Since the implementation of this plan in 1958, there has been a total of 15 scholarships granted. Of the 15, 10 girls have been graduated as Registered Nurses and 3 are still in school. Five graduated RN's have come home to Milford to work in our hospital. hos-pital. Currently there is only one on our staff who is a recipient recip-ient of the plan. Mrs. Marlene Marshall, R. N., graduated from Holy Cross Nursing School in 1971. The three who are still students are Barbara Wright, Laurie Sullivan and Darlene Carter. Each applicant for the scholarship of $1500.00 must meet the following requirements: (1) A candidate and one alternate al-ternate are selected in April of each year to receive the scholarship scholar-ship with the Board of Directors retaining the right to award or not award each year. (2) The candidate shall have a satisfactory Acedemic record in high school which is a basic requirement for admission to most Nursing schools. (3) The award is granted on a year to year basis. The recipient recip-ient is required to maintain an average of C in college work. (4) The scholarship shall be discontinued if the recipient fails a course. (5) The candidates background, back-ground, such as character, religious re-ligious attitude, extra curricular activity, service to community, and citizenship is considered by the scholarship committee in selecting se-lecting a recipient. (6) The scholarship is a grant provided the recipient meets all the conditions of the scholarship, such as maintaining an average C in college, successfully completes com-pletes the college course, and returns re-turns to work at the Milford Valley Memorial Hospital for a period of 2 years at full Registered Regis-tered Nurse salary. Failure to complete all conditions herein set forth will make the nature of the award a loan to be repaid re-paid within 5 years without interest. in-terest. The amount of the scholarship schol-arship shall be $1500.00 to be paid directly to the College of the recipient's choice. (8) The recipient is allowed to decide herself whether to take a 2-year Nursng course or a 4-year 4-year course leading to a BS degree de-gree and Registered Nurse rating. rat-ing. No other financial help above the $1500.00 is granted because be-cause of the 3rd or 4th year studies. (9) The commttee to select the recipient of the scholarship is composed cf the Administrator of the Hospital, a Physician member appointed by the Executive Execu-tive Board of the Milford Hospital, Hos-pital, the Principal of the Milford Mil-ford High School, the Senior Class Advisor, and one other to be selected by the foregoing. (10) The board will guarantee to provide scholarship so long as the girl meets all conditions as set forth. CONT. I would like to emphasize here on requirement No. 6. Any person per-son receiving the award and fulfilling ful-filling all the requirements and then has worked for the Milford Valley Hospital for a period of two years, at full salary of an RN, is not obligated in any way, morally or financially, to this institution. Only if the person fails to complete the requirements require-ments is he obligated to repay any amounts expended on him. We feel, and Fm sure you do to, this is only fair. Currently there are four schools in the State of Utah which provide a course for graduating Registered Nurses. Nurs-es. They are as follows: Weber College in Ogden has a two-year program; the University of Utah has a four-year program; St. Mary's of the Wasatch is a four-year four-year program affiliated with St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City; BYU has a two-year and a four-year program. This does not mean that a candidate is obligated to attend one of the schools in the State of Utah. He or she may attend any Nursing School of their choice. Applications Applica-tions for this program must be submitted to the selection committee com-mittee no later than April 1st. Anyone interested in this program pro-gram may contact Jackie Williams, Wil-liams, Director of Nurses, Milford Mil-ford Valley Memorial Hospital, Milford, Utah. |
