Show COWS MUST HAVE ADEQUATE NUTRITION The feed you give your cows now may well determine the percent of calf crop next year and the time of year their calves will be born. These two factors have a very important effect on income for the cattleman cattle-man according to Grant Esplin, Area Livestock Specialist, Five County Area, Beaver. . Cows must have adequate nutrition nu-trition after calving in order to get in condition to breed. A 1,000 lb. dry pregnant mature cow can get by on feed containing con-taining 15 pounds of dry matter mat-ter per day with 5.9 protein and 50 total digestable nutrient, nu-trient, 16 calcium and 16 phosphorous. This same cow the first 3-4 months after calving calv-ing needs feed containing 22 lbs. of dry matter per day with 92 protein a.nd 57 total digestable di-gestable nutrients, 28 calcium and 22 phosphorous. Her vita-man vita-man A requirements are also 50 higher after calving than before. If feed on the range isn't good enough to meet these requirements it will probably pay to supplement with alfalfa hay, grain or some other feed to put the cow in shape so she will calve early next year. |
