The loop trip outlined totals 300 miles from Pan-guitch, Pan-guitch, but side trips to Paria, the Sand Dunes and Wah-weap Wah-weap will add 100 miles to your trek. Panguitch is 240 miles from Salt Lake City. There are camp grounds t Bryce, In the new Glen Canyon Can-yon National Recreation Area and In Red Canyon. Motels and restaurants are plentiful In most towns along the route. This is layer-cake country a gigantic layer-cake with varicolored vari-colored frosting. The topmost layer is pink (Pink Cliffs at Bryce). Next below is white (the White Cliffs). Third is red (Vermillion Cliffs). And fit the base are layers of purple, pur-ple, brown, and other Painted Desert colors. Panguitch, Kanab or Page are convenient bases for starting start-ing the tour. Only a little back-tracking is necessary. If Panguitch is the base, you will enjoy a short detour by paved highway to Panguitch Lake, a fishermen's favorite. From Panguitch, drive thru Red Canyon to Bryce Canyon National Park and view this marvelous natural wonder both from the rim and at least one of the foot trails. Inquire hero at Bryce (or preferably at Panguitch before starting this Part of the tour) as to the condition con-dition of the unpaved road between be-tween Cannonville and Glen Canyon Highway. Visit Glen Canyon, cross its 700 ft high suspension bridge, and gaze in awe at the huge Glen Canyon Dam, which is creating a lake that will back up for 186 miles. If at all possible, arrange at Wah-weap Wah-weap for a powerboat trip on Lake Powell, perhaps to Rainbow Rain-bow Bridge or Hole-in-the-Rock. Retracing your route a few miles, drive back toward Ka-nab, Ka-nab, and if you have time and inclination, detour to historic Old Paria ghost town in a painted paradise. Don't hurry thru Kanab visit the Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce Museum and ask about local attractions. North of Kanab you will note a sign pointing south toward to-ward Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Visit them if you can; they are beautiful. Then continue on toward Mt. Carmel Junction, Junc-tion, Zion National Park and Cedar Breaks. |
