The advance workshop is sponsored spon-sored by the general board of the MIA, (Mutual Improvement Association). Music, drama and dance leaders lead-ers from the stakes of the church will study production techniques in preparation for similar presentations of "Promised "Prom-ised Valley" in their home stakes. Approximately 300 stakes and communities are expected ex-pected to produce the play for their local audiences during 1961. Two thousand conference visitors vis-itors are expected to attend each of the two performances, 12 noon and 8 p.m., on April 7, at Parleys-Highland Stake Center, Cen-ter, 1870 Parley's Canyon Blvd., Salt Lake City. This musical play recalls the dramatic movement of the Mormon Mor-mon pioneers from Nauvoo, Illinois, Illi-nois, to the Salt Lake Valley. Crawford Gates, who composed com-posed the original music of "Promised Valley" for its first performance during Utah's centennial cen-tennial year, 1947, will conduct the workshop cast and chorus. Dr. Gates is chairman of the music department at Brigham Young University and general board member of the MIA. The workshop cast includes members from 27" stakes and consists of 11 leads, a children's chorus, and a versatile chorus that will take the roles of pioneers, pio-neers, Indians, and soldiers. MIA leaders have divided the production responsibilities among a select group of professional pro-fessional workers. Dr. Keith Engar is directing the cast, Virginia McDonald has trained a group of dancers. Irene Staples has designed costumes. Crawford Gates is aided in the musical preparations by George I. Cannon, Margrit F. Lohner, Lorraine Bowman and Anne Bennion, all members of the MIA music committee. After conferees see the production, pro-duction, April 7, they will participate par-ticipate in demonstration and discussion sessions to train for their roles of leadership in regional re-gional productions. |
