Whether large or small, near or far, blood-related or not, there are people in our life that constitute family. Faculty, staff, and students across campus are celebrating WSU's family-friendly environment with the second Wildcat Family Weekend, Oct. 20 and 21. Banners stream around campus that say "Come Home to WSU." Wildcat Family Weekend is welcoming alumni, parents of students, children of students, brothers and sisters of parents and students, extended family, basically anyone who wants to come and have some wholesome family fun. The history Wildcat Family Weekend came about when a group of faculty and staff decided it would be nice to highlight WSU's family-friendly environment. Many staff members had come from campuses that had a family weekend or parent weekend of some sort, so why shouldn't WSU have the same? "We really looked at, as a university, how we were communicating to the campus community that we were a family-friendly campus," said John Knight, coordinator of the event and WSU's director of student life. This was one way we could highlight those programs and services that support the family in a strong way." Last year, the event was done in conjunction with Homecoming, but the two should separate this time around. "We didn't want to take away from Homecoming and vice versa, Homecoming didn't want to take away from Wildcat Family Weekend," Knight said. One major difference this year, Knight pointed out, is that they tried to stretch across campus and get as many people involved as possible. "We reached across campus to do things we couldn't do by ourselves," he said. The activities With 14 different events going on Friday and Saturday, there should be something for everyone, whether you're nine or 90. "We have some activities that are just fun things and some that are learning-centered," said Sandy Sowerby, committee member and director of public relations at WSU. She commented on the great number of people working on the event, from Chad Gerrety in athletics, to public relations, student activities and Megan Hall in student government. "We're just pulling people together to put on a fun event for the campus and W Sf- V j 'x " " . Aj. ffcv v v - rS 1 ' "c "- X k, I : ' 1 - " " . . """"" 1 y'. 9 " ' . , " "' . tf ' : o i.
