Each person's astrological chart is unique, depending on when they were born. "No two are exactly the same, each chart is like a fingerprint," said Sherry Nelsen, professional astrologer at the Thought Continuum in Ogden, Utah. "Some people are working on themselves and want to find every tool they can for that process," Nelsen said. Astrologyguide.com compares the characteristics of each person's sign to a hand of cards that each person has been dealt. They may not necessarily predict the future, but can help each person deal with life situations. Each sign of the zodiac has positive and negative characteristics that people can learn from. "They're all good, it just goes to show, it's so important to honor each other's uniqueness," Nelsen said. The first sign of the zodiac, Aries, applies to people born between March 2 1 and April 19. According to Nelsen, Ariens are impulsive and courageous, as well as blunt and argumentative. People born between April 20 and May 20 come from the zodiac sign Taurus. Nelsen said Taureans are earthy, sensual and stubborn. Gemini describes people born between May 2 1 and June 20. Ac cording to Nelsen, Geminians like to learn a little bit about everything, without exploring any subject in too much depth. Cancer, the next sign, applies to people born between June 22 and July 22. Nelsen said Cancerians are sensitive, family oriented, compassionate and insecure. People born between July 23 and Aug. 22 are Leos. Nelsen used words such as dramatic, loyal and glitzy to describe Leonians. Virgo, describes people bom between Aug. 23 and Sept. 22. Nelsen said Virgoans are earth and health conscious, service oriented and picky. People born between Sept. 23 and Oct. 22 are from the zodiac sign Libra. Librans are the lovers of the zodiac. "They love the idea of being in love," Nelsen said. They go through a lot in relationships because they need to have people in their lives. Scorpio, the next sign, applies to people born between Oct. 23 and Nov. 2 1 . Nelsen said Scorpians are intense, secretive, deep, jealous and sexual. The next sign, Sagittarius, includes people born between Nov. 22 and Dec. 21. According to Nelsen, Sagittarians are jovial and positive. People born between Dec. 22 and Jan. 19 are from the zodiac sign Capricorn. Nelsen said Capricornians are leaders. They are also stable and authoritative. This is a cheesy pickup line, but the fact is that people like astrology and reading their horoscopes. Most people aren't as familiar with Chinese astrology. It associates animal signs according to the year a person is born. The year of birth does not just indicate your age, it also guides you through life, according to the Chinese system of astrology. The Chinese astrology Tzi Wei Dou Shu is also called the Chinese calendar. In the calendar, a complete chart has been plotted according to the person's . birth year, month, day, time and place. The calendar itself also represents the 12 animal signs and each represents one significant aspect of a person's life. (Read the meaning of the sign below.) The Chinese calendar is very important in ancient China. It has also become the most popular system of astrology for practitioners in Taiwan. The calendar informs people to live in a certain way and eat certain foods. It the calendar also helps people make some important choices in life. Palmistry is a method of counseling that originated in India over 3,000 years ago. The lines of the hand are like a computer printout of thinking patterns and they , can change as our attitudes and actions in life change. Tara Nielson works as the psychic at Glifx in Layton Hills Mall. She works about 30 hours a week and stays very busy with an average of eight to 15 customers a day. Nielsen learned about palmistry mainly through her family and reading books. She grew up with it all around her. "I use what the books teach me, but I have to use intuition too." The approach to palm reading is one of careful analysis and promoting a healthy counselor client dialogue. Unlike fortune telling and tarot cards, palmistry usually doesn't make predictions about the future, but instead helps the client see trends in their attitudes and lives.
