Show THE SIGNPOST 9 Fashions reflect our social and economic status Wednesday, May 16, 1990 By Justin C. Scott Staff writer of 7he Signpost The '80s were known as a decade of aggression, greed and lust for power. Those attitudes were reflected in the fashion world where multi-colored mohawks, black, stud bedecked leather jackets and the Punk Rock fashions. "Fashion trends tend to imitate our socioeconomic status," said Desiree Cooper, fashion merchandising program director at Weber State College. "People feel more daring when we have a stable society," said Cooper. An illustration of how the economy may effect fashion is shown in the length of skirts. "If a woman feels good, shell be more daring, resulting in shorter skirts," Cooper said. "After the stock market crash of 1987, women began wearing longer skirts." The '80s saw the beginning of the executive world. More individuality was beginning to develop. Fashion consultants observe fashion transforming into a conservative style. People are looking for quality and longevity. We are seeing a repeat of the '30s, '50s and '70s fashions in the '90s with modified versions. Now, as we are beginning to open ourselves up to the rest of the world and taking into consideration the cultures of other countries, we will start to see an ethnic influence. The "In-Look" for the '90s woman will be a feministic look, with feminine prints and silhouettes that move with the body. Long skirts will be in and the big, boxy padded shoulders will be out. However, soft padded shoulders will remain. Colors of the '90s woman will be natural or earth tones for clothing and makeup. Hair is predicted to be the long, straight look. For the '90s man, earth tone colors will apply. Lapels and ties will become wider and hair should remain short and well groomed.
