Show 2 THE SIGNPOST Wednesday, May 16, 1990 DEX nominated Weber State's chapter of Delta Epsilon Chi was recognized as a top ten finalist for chapter of the year at it's national career development conference in San Jose, Calif. The chapter also received a Diamond Chapter Award for it's civic service with the Weber County Drug and Alcohol Peer Leadership Program. "The national convention gets better every year on the college level," said Byron Anderson, WSC DEX President. "Our students have to be prepared to compete against students of all ages and levels of experience in their given field." 1990 was the first year for a new event called professional development, and WSC brought home the first place plaque thanks to an outstanding presentation by Guy Watkins and Laura Gilbert. Jilane Foster, George Fuller and Steve Carter attended management institute during their stay at San Jose. Management institute is sponsored by corporations from across the nation, and offers in depth training and management trends for the 1990s. The trip WSC Financial Aid selects new director By Godfrey Akpan Staff writer of The Signpost Mr. Richard Effiong, a 1981 alumnus of Weber State College, has become the new director of student financial aid. After graduating from Weber, Effiong enrolled at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, 111., where he earned a MBA degree in 1983. In October 1983, Effiong joined the Weber State Financial Aid Department as loan officer. He was promoted to administrator in 1985and became a resource manager in 1989. "This was easily the most outstanding group of competitors I've seen at a national convention during my 10 years of involvement," said Cooper. "It makes no sense for students to have their first year salary equivalent to their outstanding loan." Effiong said, "There's similarity between going to school and working in the corporate world. In both you have enormous tasks to accomplish. According to Effiong, enrolling in cooperative work study gives students first-hand experience.
