Show 10 THE SIGNPOST Wednesday, May 16, 1990 PACKHAM (continued from page 9) said. "Not that I would do awesome; I don't think I would win. But it would be a good experience for me." With two more track seasons to go, she has a good shot of qualifying for nationals. She is currently four seconds off the provisional standard time in the 1500 meters. She also has a good chance at qualifying in the 3000 meters. "Karen is right close," said Blaisdell. "She is on the verge of making that jump, but it's going to take a lot of hard work." "Hard work" are two words that Packham understands very clearly. For instance, her determination and dedication to improve her kick at the end of a race has paid off. According to Blaisdell, she now has ability to change gears at the end of a race, either to hold people off or catch them and pass them, something she was not able to do her freshman and sophomore years. When her running career at Weber is over, she would like to get a job working in public relations. The communication major doesn't know if she will run competitively again. However, she claims she would someday like to try her hand at a marathon. "When I came here, all my roommates were talking about running marathons," she said. "I said 'no way am I going to put my body through that kind of torture.' My sophomore year I started thinking about it, and this year I decided that I want to run a marathon." With Karen's ability and determination, fans won't be surprised to someday see her on the starting line in Boston. : '-Sit ' s WEBER'S KAREN PACKHAM turns on the after burners in an attempt to get past a BYU runner. Rain prevails at time trials (USAACIN) INDIANAPOLIS For the Alfa Romeo racing team, the weather at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday could not have been much better for the first day of qualifications. The overcast sky that dropped more than an inch of rain, closing the track without a car running a lap, was better then a warm summer afternoon for Alfa. The rain is a blessing for the Alfa Romeo team, which is making its first appearance at the Speedway since 1950. The last time it was in the race, though, was 1948. Last year, Alfa Romeo did not compete at Indy because the newly formed team was not ready. This year, Alfa Romeo's drivers, Roberto Guererro and four-time winner Al Unser Sr., have struggled all week getting up to competitive speed. Before reaching 214.592 miles an hour (last year's slowest speed in the field was 213.105 mph) late in practice on Friday in nearly perfect conditions, Unser had been only able to get his car just above 200 mph. Guerrero, whose best lap was 212.384 (also on Friday) also had barely gotten over 200 mph before then. "Damn right I hope it rains all (See INDY 500 page 12) nteifent Addition. 17 Brilliant Deduction.
