Puddefoot cruised to a 6-3, 7-5 straight set victory to take the championship in number four singles, Katarina Skyllberg of WSC needed three sets to upend Amy Webster of Idaho State. With the win Skyllberg claimed the number five singles championship for the Lady Cats. "She struggled early but was able to come back and play very well," Cox said of Skyllberg. She was able to win 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Pascale Thymian of Weber State was the class of the number six singles, according to her coach."Pascal-.-blew them right off of the courts," Cox said. Thymian was able to capture the championship by thrashing Maria Swassing of Idaho State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. The lone singles setback was dealt to WSC's number one single, Christina Beer. Eri Hirose of Idaho State was able to defeat Beer 6-3, 7-5. "It was a very good match, Christina just lost to a better player on that day. However, Christina did beat her last week," said Cox. The Lady Cats led Idaho State's Bengals 48-43 after the singles matches. However Idaho State was able to storm back and sweep the doubles events. In number one doubles Idaho State's Hirose and Slade were able to team up to defeat WSC's Beer and Gunnarson 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. " It was a very ciose match," said Cox. The whole championship came down to the number two doubles match where Idaho State won the first set handily 6-3. Weber Sate was able to battle back to tie the second set 6-6 to go into a tie breaker. Idaho State won the tie-breaker 7-4 to claim a co-championship. The All-Conference team was named at the conclusion of the championship. Beer and Gunnarson were named to the team for the Lady Cats. Tracksters break records t. :,. ft "S ""J f m r. (Signpo.it photo: Jeff Bybee) Blaine Bringhurst Assistant Sports Editor Weber State's Teri Okelberry and Carol Day each set records to help pace the Lady Cats to a victory in a three-way track meet held Saturday at Wildcat Stadium. Okelberry, the only WSC female athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships so far, took first in the javelin with a throw of 168'2". The throw broke the stadium record of 166' 1" set by former Lady Cat Niki Nye in 1985. Day was able to set a new school record while placing second in the triple jump. Day's leap of 37 '9" eclipsed the old mark of 37'6" set by Tina McCombs last month. Although Day was able to break a school record she wasn't able to pick up a first place finish. Idaho State's Marci Payne jumped 38'0" to finish first. Payne's jump set a stadium record shattering Kristina Ponoton's mark of 36'1", which was set in 1985.
