Text: Parker Barney As spring quarter draws to a close, it is time to reflect back on this year's track season. The track team has been hard at work -for some, as long as nine months. This year's team was very young, but the team gained experience as the year went along. Paul Henderson, Paul Wayment, Steve Tueller and John Atterbury were the only seniors on the squad. The Wildcats had high hopes as they entered the Big Sky Outdoor Championships earlier in the month. But several key illnesses and injuries dropped the 'Cats down to sixth place overall in the team standings. However, there were several outstanding individual performances. It is interesting to note that many of the top times in the conference were much higher than other local conferences like the WAC. Henderson came on strong for the Wildcats in the final part of the season. He finished fourth in the steeplechase event at the Big Sky meet in Moscow, Idaho, then came back 20 minutes later to qualify for the finals in the 1,500-meter race. He went on to take fourth place in that event. Wayment, who was an All-American last year in the steeplechase event, suffered through an injury-plagued year, but managed to finish third in the event and fifth in the 5,000-meters. Wayment was not able to make the qualifying mark this year to go to nationals. Tueller, who has been very consistent for the 'Cats throughout the indoor and outdoor season, finished the year with a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters. High jumpers Scott Moon, Rich Stuart and Doug Fullmer added depth as well as consistency to the Wildcats all during the season. Moon and Stuart both cleared the seven foot mark this year. Other outstanding performers included sophomore Kurt Trane, junior Gerald Bean, and sophomore Tracy Fifield. Trane finished the highest of any Wildcat in the conference meet, finishing second in the intermediate hurdles. He also scored points in the high hurdles. Bean, who is from Bermuda, added depth in the 200, 400 and 800-meter races. He finished fourth in the 400-meter run this year. Fifield won the 10,000-meter race as a freshman last year, and came back with a fifth place effort this year. Other tracksters who turned in fine performances in the conference meet were Dave Broderick, who finished fifth in the pole vault (vaulting left-handed), and Kris Cary, who took sixth in the steeplechase event. Other harriers on the team included Dave Andreasen, Oscar Sosa, Bret Williams, Jerry Allred and Todd Davis, who added depth in the distance events. Mike Coe, Dave Reniker and Alan Parker ran the middle distances this year, improving their own personal times. All will return next year. Also, hurdler Terry Kealamakia, field man Chad Law and decathletes Jeff Ohlwiler and Jim Stone provided the team with fine efforts. Coach Chick Hislop will have most of his team back next year. |
