So on March 28, 1985, we all wondered what newly-named basketball coach Larry Farmer had in store for Wildcat fans. After one of the most successful collegiate careers ever (89-1, three national championships) and following a 61-23 record at UCLA as head coach, we all hoped that Weber had found its man. But, when Farmer showed up, the cupboards seemed bare. Weber had lost seven of its top 10 players to graduation, and it looked like Farmer's first year would be trying. Well, by the time the honeymoon ended, Weber was sporting a 10-1 record, and Farmer was firmly entrenched in the minds of Wildcat fans as the "Coach." Farmer introduced an exciting style of basketball to the Dee Event Center -the same style of play he had experienced under John Wooden at UCLA. At the beginning of the year, Farmer promised two things -that Weber would play hard, and they would be exciting. He openly promoted team goals over individual statistics. All of these goals seemed to be met as Farmer and his assistants, Dick Hunsaker and Craig Impelman molded new players with fresh talent. The Wildcats won 18 games in Farmer's first year. Farmer wants to upgrade Weber's schedule and has the influence to do it. "The winning tradition continues." J? For the second time, Weber State was able to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament at the Dee Event Center. The last time that Weber hosted the tourney in Ogden, an upstart North Carolina State beat everybody to win the whole tournament. And again, the team that beat everybody else in Ogden went on to win the whole tournament as Louisville beat Duke for the title. The first two rounds produced some memorable moments. North Carolina, Drexel, Bradley, UTEP, Missouri, Alabama-Birmingham, and crowd-favorite Utah were the teams that participated. Big name players like Pervis Ellison, Steve Mitchell, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith as well as coaches Denny Crum, Gene Bartow, Dean Smith and Dick Versace made the week a memorable one.
