Show Text: Mikel Bowman With an enrollment of over 1400 students, the School of Allied Health Sciences enjoys a 95 percent placement of its graduates. Established on the Weber State College campus in 1953, the school offers a curriculum of 15 programs to its students. These programs are professionally accredited by the CAHEA-Council on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. The programs in the curriculum include radiologic technologist, paramedic, emergency medical technician, respiratory therapy (AD), respiratory therapy (1 year), medical technologist, medical lab technician, radiation therapy, ultra-sound technician, associate degree nursing, practical nursing, dental hygiene, health care administration, health care education, and nuclear medicine. The Utah State Board of Regents defines the goal of the school: to provide leadership in the development, coordination, and implementation of educational programs for health workers in the board categories of direct patient care services, diagnostic services, and administrative services as related to health. Because of the limited clinical education space and professional accreditation requirements, the enrollment of students in each program is limited. The faculty and an admissions specialist select the number of students from over 1,000 applicants each year. Students of the School of Allied Health Sciences are taught in a number of classrooms that are widely spread all over the campus. Classes are also taught at McKay-Dee, St. Benedict's, and Weber County hospitals. This wide dispersion of classrooms and laboratories hinders efficient use of equipment and supplies. It also takes up the time of students and faculty as well. A new Allied Health Science building is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 1, 1986. Some of the need for classroom efficiency will be satisfied with this new building. The faculty at the school include 66 full-time educators: 6 professors, 17 associates, 20 assistants, 21 instructors, and 2 in other categories. The rapid changes which take place in the field of health care require faculty members to continually update and renew their skills and knowledge in their respective fields. The faculty is very active and committed to the success of the school's programs, according to Dr. Richard R. Stringham, dean of the School of Allied Health. "We train our students in classroom laboratories that simulate the clinical setting. We then follow-up instruction in local hospitals and clinics to give our students the best possible training," said Dr. Stringham. In addition, some programs of the school are using computer simulation and computer-assisted video in an attempt to better prepare students in the field of health care. The school is involved in many activities both on and off the campus. One of them is Career Health Day. With this activity, area high school students are brought to the WSC campus to see the school and what programs it has to offer. Allied Health - v '- 'J MICROSCOPES combined with video equipment is a new system used by clinical laboratory technology students at WSC. This system could revolutionize medical training, said the project director. The School of Allied Health Sciences travels to several campuses throughout the state, both high school and college, to take part in health fairs and show people what they have to offer. The school also sponsors Allied Health Week and has convocation speakers who address students on the current issues in the health care field.
