Some of the alumni weighed a bit more or less or were a step slower than when they originally played, but they were back in uniform wearing their pads and pacing the sidelines with shoulders squared and heads up. ' . For the varsity members, some of whom Will probably be playing on the alumni side next year, they passed their first major season test with the win and, inJhe process, learned what their team is capable of: their defense led by Joe Lorg and Renaldo Bevers in this game is for real.. . . 1 vLorg led the team ;with four unassisted tackles and had one interception, Vhile Bevers had three unassisted tackles, an interception, and a QB sack1 resulting in a 23-yard loss for the alumni.Offensively, the Wildcat lesson givers were runningback Sean Sanders who had an' impressive 93 yards rushing on 12 attempts, kicker Hepry vho scored six points in his first game as a Weber Stater, and receiver Darrington. Coach Price and his players are hoping the other Weber opponents will be good pupils when the regular season starts next fall. The alumni already learned their lesson. Ruzek started off the game scoring with a 50-yard field goal early in the game, a distance only four yards short of the Wildcat stadium record in 1977. The alumni then made the 'score 10-0 on a 53-yard TD strike frorp Carlson to Ken Sanders, who displayed some fine open field running to cross the goalline standing up. .Varsity QB Brian Larsen then "brought his team back with a 12-yard scoring pass to Darrington to make the score 10-7. !, The alumni theh depended on a 56-yard field goal by Ruzek to pad their lead 13-7. This set an unoffical Wildcat stadium record for field goal distance. Ini the second quarter, both teams' fought frantically ' to establish supremacy over the pther, and the varsity finally succeeded in the waning minute as Darrington caught a three-yard TD, barely inbounds past thelgoah line marker to pace the varsity to a14-13 hafftime advantage. ' Varsity kicker Sean Henry nailed a 27 -yard field goal late in the third quarter to redeem himself from misses of 22 and 38-yard attempts eailier in the .game. After three quarters, the varsity led 17-13. k Larsen scored' on a one-yard run in the last quarter,, and Henry hit his third extra point to give the varsity and WSC Cpach Mike Price a 24-13 victory, Among the disappointed members of the alumni team were former WSC Lady golfers perform at NCAA's by Dave Allison Ass't Sports Editor Chris Newton and Becky Whitworth of Weber State's Lady Cat golf team concluded their participation in the National Collegiate women's golf tournament last Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. Competing against the nation's best collegians, Newton shot aone-under-par 72 to end the tourney with a four day total of 291. Newton was torrid on the final day of competition and had a shot at the course record before suffering a double bogey on her last hole. Newton scored previous rounds of 77, 77 and 82 to place 53 among individuals invited to the pestigious tournament. She tied for 53rd with defending NCAA medalist Danielle Ammaccapane of Arizona State. However, Newton finished second against Division II linksters behind Tina Barrett of Long Wood College out of Farmville, Virginia. Newton was ranked first in Division II going into the NCAA tourney while Barrett was the number two ranked golfer. Weber State's other entry, Becky Whitworth, concluded play at Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course, shooting an 81. Whitworth had earlier rounds of 79, 84 and 79 for a 323 total and finished 94th in the country. Both Newton and Whitworth are juniors, so the WSC's women golfers will get another shot if invited to next season's NCAA tourney.
