Show Signpost Tuesday, June 3, 1986 15 Henderson, Wayment going to NCAA championships appeared that Weber's 3000-meter steeplechasers Paul Henderson and Mark Wayment had seen their season-long quest to reach the NCAA championship qualifing mark by Mike Coe Sports Editor of 8:44.7 fall just a little short. The Big Sky meet, in which Wayment finished third and Henderson fourth, was the last' scheduled meet for the Wildcats this year. But, when both Henderson and Wayment came back with some gutsy performances in the conference meet after their steeplechase race (Henderson in the 1500 and 5000-meter races and Wayment in the 5000), Weber coach Chick Hislop was impressed with the effort that they gave. After they gave 1000 percent at the conference meet, I felt they deserved another shot (at qualifying)."Henderson and Wayment's shot came at the Twilight Track Meet held in Corvallis, Oregon last Thurday at the Oregon State track. The race went out fast, but the Weber dual keep their heads and stayed at the pace.Hislop had planned. The two stayed closed to each other, and at the end of the race, they crossed the finish line together in second place, tying each other. Their times were exactly the same (8:41.01), and more than three seconds faster than the national qualifying time. Henderson's time was a personal best by more than eight seconds and places him third on the all-time Weber State list, while Wayment's time was five -seconds off his best. Winning the race was Oregon State's Carl Van Calcar This week, Henderson and Wayment will run in the NCAA meet. Trials in the steeplechase are on Wednesday with the finals set for Friday. According to Hislop, if the pair runs close to the time that they ran in Oregon, they should make the finals.
