Show 14 Signpost Tuesday, June 3, 1986 Villaroman, Tola score high marks in national tourney by Matthew Madsen Staff Reporter Super freshman Carito Villaroman shot a.one-under-par 287 to finish tied for third place in the NCAA Golf Championships held at the 7,079-yard Bermuda Run Country Club in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. ' Villaroman's third place is the best-ever NCAA finish by a Weber State player in the history of the school. Villaroman opened the tournament with a first round score 6f one-over-par 73 which put him in 38th place out of a total of 183 players. He then fired a two- under-par 70 which jumped him into sixth place after two rounds. , He moved up to third place by shooting another two-under-par 70 in the third round. On the final round, he shot a solid 74 and finished with a share of third place. The high finish will have many rewards for Villaroman, a 17-year-old freshman from the Philippines. Villaroman automatically becomes an AU-Ameriqan by taking third in the field of 183 in the NCAA Championship. He joins an elite group of players from the entire country to receive recognition of being an Ail-American. Villaroman is also one of the six underclassmen who qualified for. an all-expense paid trip to the ' A! Weber's Davey Davis dodges a defender in Saturday's annual varsity-alumni game. He also qualified to play in the Sun Bowl Ail-American Tournament, which is strictly for Ail-Americans, this November in El Paso, Texas ... the same tournament that former Weber State All-American Mike Gove won in 1978. Villaroman will be the first Wildcat golfer to play in the the Sun Bowl since Gove. WSC Coach Mac Madsen is extremely pleased with Villaroman's performance. "This is the best-ever NCAA finish by a Weber State player. Carito beat seven of the eight first-team All-Americans, including U.S'. Amateur champion and College Player of the Year, Sam Randolph of Southern Cal. It's an amazing feat for a 17-year-old kid and is just beginning to start what looks like a tremendous career." The only other 'Cat golfer participating at the NCAA's, Miguel Tola, also performed well at the NCAAs. Tola shot two fine rounds of 75 and 72 before an interrupting round of 79 prevented him from making the cut after 54 holes. However, Tola captured the long drive accuracy contest by landing three drives in the fairway with a 293-yard-per-drive average. Coach Madsen speculated that with Villaroman's outstanding play and the two solid rounds by Tola, the Wildcats might very well have been one of the top 20 teams if they would have had their full team there. Okalohoma State's Scott Verplank, who already has one PGA victory under his belt, won the individual championship with a six-under-par 282. Four strokes down in second place was Houston's Mike Standy with 286. There was a five-way tie for third place which included Villaroman. Wake Forest made an unbelievable comeback to claim the team title, a four -over-par 1,156. The WF Deacons, trailing number one ranked Oklahoma State by 16 strokes going into the final round, shot a 10-under-par 278 to gain 20 strokes and beat out the Cowboys by four strokes. Oklahoma State finished third with a team total of 1,163 and BYU finished fourth at 1,167. "As the years pass, there will be two vivid memories of the 1986 tournament," said Madsen, "the exciting come-from-behind viptory by Wake Forest and the brilliant play from a 17-year old freshman from the Philippines in his first NCAA tournament." Varsity dumps alumni by Michael J. Tupa Staff Reporter A brotherhood of pads and cleats and memories past stood on the west sidelines at Wildcat stadium for the annual varsity-alumni football game. The alumni Wildcat squad stood together once more, reliving the thrill of a stadium audience and the pulsing game adrenalin which only those who have been on a team can appreciate. They met the varsity team, and for the first fifteen minutes, the alumni enjoyed domination with scores of 10-0 and 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. But the roof caved in for the past gridders as the varsity asserted their skills, finely tuned by the recently concluded spring practices, to win handily, 24-13. Enroute to their impressive victory, the Weber State varsity defense was able to pull itself together after a shaky first quarter and stymied the alumni runn-ingbacks to zero yards on 21 attempts for the game. Senior flanker Chris Darrington sparked the varsity offense with eight receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned two punts for 42 total yards and one kickoff for 22 yards. Starring for the alumni were kicker Roger Ruzek, who plays for the USFL's Memphis Showboats, and sophomore quarterback Jeff Carlson, who redshirted last year.
