Show 10 Signpost- Monday, May 9, 1988 Volleyball team spikes celebrities Lynn Martineau Asst. Sports Editor The women's volleyball team proved too talented for the celebrity team in the second annual Founder's Day volleyball match last Friday. The celebrity team, led by Weber State College President, Stephen D. Nadauld, challenged the Lady 'Cats in the first game but lost 15-7. The celebrities also lost the second game 15-3, but winning the match was not as important to the celebrities as rallying support for the WSC volleyball team. "We hope to introduce people of influence to the game of volleyball," said Nadauld. To do so, Nadauld enlisted the help of several local dignitaries. Ogdcn city Mayor, Clifford Goff was impressive on the court both offensively and defensively. Standard-Examiner General Manager, Bill "the kill" Johnson showed great serving ability and played equally as well at the net in his second appearance at the celebrity match. Jane Marquardt literally used her head to set the ball up for her teammates, but the ball went out of bounds. And Nadauld showed that he has plenty of athletic ability as well. Even with such athletic talent, the celebrities found themselves out-manned in the third match when Assistant Volleyball Coach, Mashallah Farokhmanesh took on the entire celebrity team. With Farokhmanesh leading 8-0 Nadauld called time-out. Nadauld made several substitutions including the addition of two extra players to the celebrity line-up. But even with the two extra players, the celebrities were no match for Farokhmanesh who went on to win 15-0. "He (Farokhmanesh) is very good; I can't believe we couldn't score a single point against him," said Nadauld. Farokhmanesh was a seven year member of the Iran national team. He was drafted to play in the IVA pro-volleyball league, but the league folded the year he was drafted. In the fourth and fifth matches, the celebrity team was split into two teams and each team was joined by three of the Lady 'Cats. The Lady 'Cats looked strong at every position. "The lady volleyball players arc just tremendous athletes," said Nadauld. Ladies tune up for MWAC meet Lynn Martineau Asst. Sports Editor The Weber State women's track and field team made a good showing at the Mountain West Athletic Conference Southern Division meet Saturday. The Lady 'Cats placed third in the five team non-scoring meet. Northern Arizona placed first with 81 points; Boise State second with 66; WSC had 60; Idaho State was fourth with 54 and Nevada-Reno could only muster seven points. The meet means nothing as far as point totals or qualifying for the conference meet May 18-21. It did, however, give the women a chance to compete against their conference rivals. "It was a good meet the two teams that beat us were favored to be the number one and two teams at the meet," said Women's Track and Field Coach, Jim Blaisdell. N. Arizona took the indoor conference championship and Boise State has won the conference three of the last four seasons. Several of the WSC women turned in their personal bests of the season in spite of the cool and windy weather. "We didn't have a lot of firsts, but we did get six seconds and five thirds," said Blaisdell. Blaisdell said, " Lori Child had a good performance in the 200 meters turning in her season's best effort." Child ran the 200 in 25.04 for third place. In the 800 meters it was Kelly Davis placing second for WSC with 2:16.18 with Tcri Okelbcrry following for fourth with 2:19.27. "Kelly Davis really looked good," said Blaisdell. Okelbcrry later took Weber's only first at the meet with a javelin throw of 163'5". Karen Packham brought home a couple of thirds, in the 3,000 meter run she had a time of 10:26.62, and in the 1,500 meters she turned in a 4:40.72. Laura Jensen ran the 1,500 in 4:54.43 for a fifth place finish. "Packham had her fastest time of the year in the 1,500 meters against some awfully tough competition," said Blaisdell.
