Wildcat Netters Claim Second Consecutive Crown by Dan Dickson Sports Editor The Weber State men's tennis team claimed three individual titles and tied for a fourth in winning their second consecutive Big Sky Tennis Championship. It is also the fourth tennis title the Wildcats have won in six years. Weber won all seven of its matches, defeating every other team in the Big Sky, to easily win the title. Jonas Ehrlin, Weber's number two singles player, won all seven of his matches to win the number two singles title. Weber's Rod Horton and Bill Collins also won all seven of therr matches to capture titles in the number five and six singles, respectively. Weber's number one player Eric Styrmoe tied with Martin Gagnon of Reno and Chris Langdon of Boise in the number one singles competition. All three players finished with 6-1 marks, but Reno's Gagnon was voted the outstanding player in the tournament.None of Weber's three doubles teams were able to win a title, as the Boise State doubles team of Charles Berwald and Suresh Menon won the number one doubles title with a 7-0 mark. Styrmoe and Ehrlin, Weber's number one doubles team finished second, with a 6-1 mark, losing only to Boise State in a close match. Kishan Wickramasigne and Martin Gagnon of Reno won the number two doubles title.Weber went 5-2 in the number three doubles to finish behind Bosie State. Rich Megal and Maurice Vasconcellas went 7-0 for Boise. Horton and Collins, Weber's number three doubles team, did beat Reno's number three team to give Weber the team victory over Reno. Weber opened play by winning two matches Thursday. Weber defeated Boise 7-2 in the morning round, then beat Montana 8-1 in the afternoon. WSC beat Northern Arizona and Montana State Friday. Weber beat Idaho 7-2 Saturday morning, then beat Nevada-Reno 5-4 to clinch the team title. Weber finished the tournament with a 7-2 victory over Idaho State Sunday morning. Tennis coach Keith Cox said Saturday's win over Nevada-Reno was one of the best matches he has seen. Weber made an incredible turn around in the doubles to win the match. After splitting the singles matches 3-3, Weber won two of the three doubles matches, coming from behind in both, to win the match. Reno had match points in both the double matches Weber won. Cox said he may have had better tennis teams but he has never had a team with more heart. Cox is very proud of the team and their accomplishments this year. Other individual winners in the Big Sky matches were Mike Henneberry of Northern Arizona winning the number three singles title, while Kishan Wickramasinghe of Nevada-Reno won the number four singles title. The Weber tennis team leaves Wednesday for Monroe, Louisianna, to compete in the National Invitational Tennis Tournament. This is the second consecutive year Weber has been invited to play in the tournament. Cox said Weber could have the weakest team in the NIT field, but that doesn't mean his players won't be giving 100 percent. Regardless of how Weber fin-sihes in the tournament, Cox still feels it is an honor to play in the tournament. If Weber can upset a team or two in the NIT it will do a lot for the school and the tennis team. Cox is also proud of the fact that four of his eight players (Collins, Horton, Robinson and Craig Zimmerman) are from the state of Utah. In past years the team has been dominated by out-of-state players. After Weber returns home from the NIT tournament, Weber's Eric Styrmoe will then participate in the NCAA tournament, being only the third player in Big Sky history to play in the NCAA's. The other two were also Weber players. Peter Markos and Barry Nissenbaum also have participated in past NCAA tournaments. Styrmoe is currently ranked number 68 in the Top 100 college rankings. The final team standings in Big Sky tennis tournament were: Weber 7-0, Nevada-Reno 6-1, Idaho 5-2, Norhtern Arizona 4-3, Boise State 3-4, Montana 1-6, Montana State 1-6, and Idaho State 1-6. |
