It is recommended that students apply for graduation at least three quarters prior to the quarter in which they plan to complete their requirements. The purpose is to allow the graduation office time to evaluate the student's standing and notify them of their deficiencies so that they can plan their senior year. It will then be the student's responsibility to complete the needed requirements. Professor Gathers International Papers by Steve Fifield Senior Reporter Dr. Deon C. Greer, WSC geology and geography instuctor, will be going to Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Israel and Australia this summer. Greer will leave in June and return in September. The purpose of his visit will be to encourage terminal lake professionals in those countries to complete their portion of a book that is under Greer's direction. Greer will also present a paper on the Great Salt Lake at a terminal lake conference in Moscow and Australia. A terminal lake is one that has no outlet, such as the Great Salt Lake. Greer said that his interest in the Great Salt Lake "led to the production of a map (of the lake) which was published by the Association of American Geographers, as well as the publicaiton of a number of articles and a book (about the lake)." In 1977, Greer organized an international conference on the world's desertic terminal lakes. The conference attracted specialists on terminal lakes and geographers from all over the world to Ogden. Greer spent the 1977-78 school year as an exchange scientist in Moscow with the USSR Academy of Sciences' Water Problems Institute. While there, he was involved in research and consultation on the problems concerning terminal lakes. While in Moscow, Greer decided to get started on a book about terminal lakes. Greer said, "I could see that there's a great need for a publication about terminal lakes. Ten of the forty largest lakes in the world are terminal." "Each of the terminal lakes in the world that will appear in the book has a team (of experts) that writes about them (the lakes)," Greer said. "I decided to give each one of them an outline and have them write a chapter in the book." "I've run into a lot of problems, as you can imagine, in dealing with thirty people throughout the world," Greer said. "I want to go to the Soviet Union to work out the details of the book," he said. "The problem in the Soviet Union isn't writing the material but getting it out."
