Show 'Bounty' Achieves Authenticity Signpost-Tuesday, May 8, 1984 15 by Dona Skaff Entertainment Euitor The Bounty is the story of the famed 18th Century voyage of the ship "The Bounty" from England to the South Seas, its dramatic mutiny, and the romance of the ship's first officer (and mutiny leader) with a beautiful Tahi-tian princess. It is also one of the best movies I've seen in a while. The Bounty has everything. It has great photography. The sunsets and island scenes are really something to behold. It has great music. The music was composed and performed by Vangelis, whom you might recognize from the movie Chariots of Fire. It has great acting. There are some great performances by Sir Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. But most importantly, the film has a great plot. It is not slow or dull. It is full of adventure. The movie creators really strove for authenticity. Members of the cast spent numerous hours reading documents and books from that period including "Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian" by Richard Hough which the movie was based on. Experts were called in to make a detailed replica of the "Bounty," which cost Orion Pictures four million dollars to contruct. Other specialists were used in the areas of costume, make up and set design. All this work was done to attain authenticity and to me they acheived it. The movie had a lot of great acting, the best roles being that of Lt. William Bligh (played by Anthony Hopkins), and Fletcher Christian (played by Mel Gibson). These actors obviously did a lot of research on their characters and that's what made a difference. Their characters were very believable. The Bounty is a movie with everything and will surely appeal to viewers of all ages and interests. I found this movie very entertaining and very much worth my while to see.
