Show 14 Signpost-Tuesday, May 8, 1984 'Symphony On Ice' To Be Performed The Utah Symphony is bringing some of the best ice skaters in the country to the Salt Palace for this year's "Symphony on Ice" extravaganza, May 18 and 19. The symphony, led by Associate Conductor Charles Ket-chem, will provide tunes for Olympic gold-medalist Dorothy Hamill, World Champions Judy Blumberg and Michael Seibert, the Sun Valley Ice Arena Precision team, and many Utah skaters. The programs start at 8 p.m. each evening. The symphony will be playing many of America's favorite tunes, including Anderson's "Fiddle-Faddle," Berstein's "West Side Story," the great "New York, New York," the "Theme from the Pink Panther," "Dr. Zhivago," as well as other selections. "This combination of music and ice skating will be a very special experience," said Ketchum. Hamill, who has won 37 major skating awards and championships, is a natural beauty who skates with grace and speed. She is a guest skater with the Ice Capades, and is also puirsuing an acting career. Blumberg and Siebert were just edged out of third place in this year's Winter Olympics at Sarajevo, but went on to show the world that they are true champions when shortly after the Olympic Games ended they outskated all the competition in the world to become this year's World Champions. The Sun Valley Ice Arena Precision ! Dorothy Hamill team has taken 11 first- and second-place trophies in skating across the country since 1978. Other skaters in the Utah Symphony's "Symphony on Ice" are John Stead, a 12-year-old skater from Dubai, Saudi Arabia; Shane Douglas, co-director of the Iceland Skating School in Sacramento, California; and Utah skaters Betty Lewis, Merill Rowland, and Jeff Wasson. "Symphony on Ice" is sponsored by Clark Financial Corporation. Good tickets are still available at the Utah Symphony box office. Ticket prices are $5, $10, $15, and $18, with a 20 percent discount for patrons under 16 years of age, families, and groups. Union Movie -"VictorVictoria" will be playing May 9-12 in the Union Building at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $1.50 with WSC ID,. $2 without, and $1 for children 7-12 (under 6 free.) Midnight movie Friday and Saturday is "Eraser Head." Senior Recital-Scott Wood will be performing in the Choral Room of the Browning Center at 7 p.m., May 10. For more information call 626-6437. WSC Music Dept. - The Weber State Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will give a concert at 8 p.m. on May 11 in the Allred Theatre. The concert is free to the public and will be directed by guest conductor Hohn P. Paynter, director of Bands at Northwestern University in Chicago. Carillon Concert -A Mother's Day concert will be held at the Stewart Bell Tower at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 13. The public is invited. WSC Orchestra -will be performing in the Austad Auditorium on May 15 at 8 p.m. The concert is free to the public. For more information call 626-6991. USAF Quintet To Perform The Air Force Academy Woodwind Quintet will perform in a free concert on May 16 at Weber State College. The "Rampart Winds" is the USAF official woodwind quintet, and they will perform at 8 p.m. in the Allred Theater of the Browning Center. The group will also give a free clinic the same day at noon in the choral room, room 229, of the fine arts building. The five professional, , enlisted musicians who comprise the quintet have 45 combined years of performing solo and chamber music, and all members of the "Rampart Winds" have studied with internationally-known artists. The Colorado-based quintet has toured much of the western United States and has appeared on a number of radio and television stations. According to Tom Wubbenhorst, a music instructor in the WSC department of music, the clinic with the quintet will cover topics pertaining to small groupperformances.
