Show 8 Signpost Friday, May 13, 1983 CENTER STAQE 'Players' theater company wsc Band to march in nyc parade stages old" time melodrama The plot begins with "Somewhere in the Southwest on the None Such Ranch" and from there develops into a light hearted,boo-the--villain-cheer-the-hero melodrama. "The Curse of an Aching Heart" or "Trapped in the Spider's Web" is an old-time production that will be presented by the "Weber State College Players" May 19-21, 26-28 in the Monson theater of the Browning Center for the Performing Arts. The "WSC Players" is a student organization in the Weber State Theater Deapartment that puts together a production of their own once every two years. This year, said group president Kelly Ann Smith, the play centers on the bleak trials of a woman, Melody Lane (played by Kathleen K. McComb), caught between her love for hero (Drew James Benson), and her marriage to villain Windermere Hightower (John Morris). Interwoven in the show is also a plot by the villain to steal the ranch from the struggling owners. "We have chosen a melodrama for the production this year because we want to do something that is thoroughly fun for both the actors and the audience," said Ms. Smith. The audience will be encouraged to hiss and boo the villain while cheering for the hero. "It's all in fun and there's a lot of corn," Ms. Smith added. According to student director Krista Cae Mortenson, she encouraged the cast to be as creative as possible. "I am allowing the actors to create and go to the limits of characterization. Many of the olios have been created through improvisation by the actors," Ms. Mortenson said. Olios, or short jokes, songs and dance, will precede the show and continue throughout. Tickets are currently on sale at the WSC Theater ticket office in the Browning center at $2 for general admission and $1 for Weber State students. Reservations can be made by calling 626-6433. The production staff includes students Robert D.-Vaughan as the scene designer, Andrea McNeil on lighting, Elizabeth R. Owens as costume designer and Donna Jean Walker as stage manager. The Weber State College band will be one of 12 bands from the United States and Canada to participate in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. According to Thomas M. Wubbenhorst, assistant professor of music and director of WSC bands, the 90-member band will leave Nov. 22 for New York to participate in the traditional parade.
