Jammal said that for them it is not neccessary to pray in a mosque, but they can practice their religion anywhere. He also said, "Being Moslem there are certain traditions that we cannot mix (with the American culture) ." For example women are not allowed to be in the same area with other men if their husband is not present. Jammal said that at times it gets very lonely for his wife. Adnan Ghanim, vice president, is a Palestinian student. He has traveled throughout most of the United States as the Western representative of the General Union for Palestinian Students. Ghanim enjoys the urban areas of the country, especially San Francisco and Seattle. He stated that most of the concepts that people from outside of the U.S. have about the U.S. are aquired through films. He said, "Around 90 percent of the movies seen at home are from here. It (the United States) is different from what we see on T.V. We thought we would see all skyscrapers." Imtiaz Chaudhry, a pre-med student, is from Pakistan. He is currently serving as ISA's secretary. When Chaudhry first came to Weber he said that food was a problem because the Moslem religion prohibits the eating of certain types of food. For the first 15 days he lived only on eggs and vegetables. Transportation also provided an obsticle for Chaudhry because he had no way to get around when he first arrived in the United States. Life in the dorms was also challenging. "I had a hard time with the dorms, girls and guys living in the same area." (The schools in Pakistan seperate the sexes.) "But after about six months I learned that this is America." Chaudhry espouses a philosophy that helps alleviate homesickness for him. He said that because he is Moslem, "The world is my home." Treasurer of ISA is Hirokazu Makashi from Japan. "I came here for the experience. To see people and leave my family," he said. "Everything I do each day is a new experience." Makashi is majoring in psychology. His sense of humor is evident when he talked of sending home souvenirs and gifts to his family in Japan. "When I send something home, I look on it and it is made in Japan." he laughed. According to Sarah Schmidt a problem that many international students face is meeting other students. "Generally international students don't feel it is easy at all to meet other students." Schmidt said. "There are also those who are homesick, and there is also a language barrier which creates difficulty for the students." One international student whose bubbly personality has helped her to meet people and make friends at Weber is Elizabeth Prado. Prado is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Prado stated that she never thought she would one day end up in the United States, she had always planned on going to France or England. Marriage, however, changed all of that. Prado's husband, Eduardo Prado, is also Brazilian and he is at Weber majoring in automotive technology. The reason the Prados chose WSC is the excellence of the automotive technology program at Weber. According to Mr. Prado, Weber's is one of the best in the country . Elizabeth Prado is majoring in foreign languages and she hopes to teach French someday. She has traveled many places throughout the world because of her father's work as a diplomat and Prado loves to talk of her home. "The people in Rio are warm, very warm." Prado's first impression of Ogden was that the people at first were cool. "Reserved is the best word. You have to keep trying to get to know the people and after a while they open up and they are wonderful people," she said. The knowledge, culture and customs brought to Weber Siate by international students enrich us all. Thanks to them the mosaic of Weber State is complete.
