Show B6 Signpost Tuesday, September 27, 1983 signpost Begins 48th Year of service to weber state The Signpost has been around for a long time. Back before 1935, Weber college students had no campus newspaper. Students attended school at the old Weber College located on 25th and Jefferson (where the Deseret Gym is now). Somebody built a wooden bulletin board that soon became the forum for classified ads, lost and found, news of campus events and an occasional love letter. Somebody else named it the Signpost. Fortunately, funds were finally appropriated for a real newspaper and a staff to produce it. It seemed appropriate to name it . . . you guessed it! Since 1935 the Signpost has been produced without interruption either bimonthly, biweekly or semi-weekly and has revised its volumn numbering system at least three times. The style of the paper has changed several times over the years. The archives department of the Stewart Library has a copy of every previous issue of the Signpost. It is fascinating to read the old news: a new campus is built on Harrison Boulevard, veterans return from the Korean and Vietnam wars, and students are apathetic about voting for student government. The archives are open to anyone curious about the past, and the old Signposts make engrossing reading. This year's staff is a mixture of experienced people and new recruits. Deadlines are met twice a week by editors, reporters, advertising and production staff members. The editorial crew is headed by Lisa Wright-Largent (see insert). Managing editor is Donna Layton, who is a senior majoring in public relations. She helps Lisa to ensure a quality paper, assigns stories to reporters, and produces the front page. Rae Dawn Olbert, a sophomore journalism major, is the news editor. Campus Update and inside news stories are her responsibility. As entertainment editor, Kevin Car-rillo has a theatre and music background to qualify his opinions. He'll even tackle reviewing some movies and TV programs. Another kind of tackle will be handled by Colleen Mewing, in her second year as sports editor. Colleen knows her sports, both on and off the field or court. Richard Curtis has been both business manager and advertising manager of the Signpost for four years. He heads a staff of seven salespeople. Production editor, Kristie Jenson uses her artistic and managing talents to produce each page. Another artistic staff member is Grove Pashley, the new photo editor. From the Tumbleweed Times at Big Bend Community College comes Brian Slaugh, who will use his talent for writing feature stories as the Signature editor. Three-year veteran of this paper, Joan Wilcox, will be watching the writers for mistakes. As a senior English major, Joan is very competent as copy editor. The staff has received valuable advice and comfort from Larry Stahle, faculty advisor. With 40 years of newspaper experience, Larry can help students use their talents to their utmost abilities. It seems to me in almost every class I attend the girls are on one side and the boys on the other. I think the girls should take things into their own hands, stop bunching up and start being sociable. Sincerely, Leo Eastman December 5, 1952 "To my knowledge thei has never been, in any junior college or universtiy in the state of Utah, a larger journalism class than registered at Weber this quarter," said Mr. Nilsson, journalism class instructor and Signpost advisor. The enrollment was 41, which helped to enlarge the Signpost staff. January 19, 1940 Our Editor in Chief for 1983-84 is Lisa Wright-Largent. That name sounds familiar because Lisa was managing editor last year and the sports editor before that. She is a highly qualified choice for the job. As a senior majoring in journalism and public relations, Lisa has written many stories and editorials for the Signpost. This year she will be responsible for the entire operation of the paper. A graduate of Ogden High School in 1979, Lisa went on to earn her associate degree from Ricks College. At Weber State she was a finalist for the Crystal Crest Woman of the Year award last year. After graduation in March, she hopes to begin a career in the travel industry. Lisa is studying French and intends to become multiligual, learning German, Russian and Spanish. "Last year the paper really improved. This year I plan to refine the look of the paper make it easier to read with fewer mistakes. Our main emphasis will be campus news and events. I am excited to work with our news staff, and am happy to have the support and guidance from Larry Stahle, our faculty advisor." Lisa recently married Steve Largent, last year's Editor In Chief. Steve is currently employed by the Utah Heart Association. w 4 K c I f - V i x v , f t V Donna Layton Managing editor 1 i i Y Rae Dawn Olbert News editor Colleen Mewing Sports editor 9 t M 1 f I Kevin Carrillo Entertainment editor |
