Show A8 Signpost Tuesday, September 27, 1983 DENTS Wl t We did ft u tC US 1L ERWIN STONE: Erwin, an all conference defensive back, is a three-year Army ROTC Scholarship winner. While involved with football he is studying Marketing and Psychology and hopes to become an "Efficient Army Officer." Erwin was raised in the military and consequently has lived in many countries throughout the world. He is a graduate from the American High School systems in West Germany. Born at Fort Sill, Oklahoma he has also had the chance to live in the Panama Zone, Wurzburg and Berlin in Germany. In addition to becoming a United States Army Officer, Erwin is interested in qualifying for the 1984 Olympics. He has been a track star during High School and Junior College and he is continuing his athletic pursuits here at Weber State College. Erwin feels that the combination of a college education and ROTC experience will make him a more well-rounded individual. CLARK ROBERTS: In 1979, Clark was the Outstanding Athlete of the year at Ogden High School, lettering in Wrestling, Cross Country Skiing and Track. He was born in Salt Lake City and served an LDS mission to Germany in 1980-82. While in Germany Clark learned to speak fluent German. He is attending Weber State College on a Reserve Component Scholarship. He has also been awarded a scholarship for track here at Weber State, his speciality being the Steeple Chase. Clark is following in the footsteps of his father, who is the Commander of the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion (Linguistics) in the Utah National Guard. He likes the Guard program because it gives him a chance to stay in the area and yet offers the opportunity for travel, a means of keeping current with his language skills, and provides a good supplimental income. JON HEWITT: Son of Robert and Dawna Hewitt, born in Ogden, Utah, 18 March 1963. Jon graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1981 where he was actively involved in the concert choir. While participating in the Army ROTC program, Jon is learning valuable skills such as leadership and discipline, but most importantly he is learning about himself and while Jon attends Weber State, his tuition, books, lab fees and supplies are paid for by Army ROTC. Jon say's "I joined the ROTC program because of my life long interest in the military. The ROTC program has instilled in me a great sense of patriotism and has helped me grow both mentally and emotionally." TARA KAREGEANNES: What does 20 year old Tara and her brother have in common? Tara has joined her brother in the Army ROTC program here at Weber State College. Tara is from Detroit Michigan, is currently majoring in journalism, and was feature editor in the Lancer Girls Club. She is actively involved in intramural Softball and football. Tara has been awared a three-year Army ROTC Scholarship and she is using her scholarship here at Weber State College. The military is not new to Tara. Her father is a career Army Officer and is currently the Commander of the Tooele Army Depot. Says Tara, "With my Army ROTC Scholarship I can get much more out of my college education. ROTC offers college women some fascinating career opportunities. The class work and practical training help increase my leadership ability and confidence in what I can do." LANE CEDRIC ROLLING: Cedric has won varsity letters in Baseball and track, in addition to being All-State and All-Conference in football. 19 year old Cedric was born in Louisiana, graduated from Valley High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also received an academic nomination to the U.S. Air Force Academy. At WSC, Cedric, now a sophomore, is a member of the TKE fraternity and is active in student government. He is currently pursuing a major in microbiology and wants to continue on to Bethezda University, Maryland, which is the Medical School for the United States Armed Forces. Cedric feels that the ROTC program has a great deal in common with Athletics. "It develops an awareness of the importance of teamwork, organization, andself-discipline." 4 , i -- I- X i I j What is an ROTC Scholarship? One of the Best Scholarships Available, it pays: . All tuition, fees, and supplies. A Flat Rate for books. A living allowance of $1,000 each year. A 3-year scholarship is worth more than $7,000 at WSC. ' Who Qualifies for a Scholarship? Male or female students under 25 years of age in June of year they graduate. (Veterans must be under 28). Must have at least 2 years college remaining in September 1984. Must be a U.S. citizen of good moral character. Have a G PA of 2.7 or above depending on academic major. Why Should I Apply? It's the program that can add an important dimension to your education by preparing you to handle the varied demands and heavy competition of life-after graduation. ROTC will give you plenty of opportunities to practice the leadership skills learned in the classroom and to reinforce your self confidence. Mountaineering, rappelling, airborne, orienteering these are a few of many activities in which you can discover your hidden strengths and develop them to the fullest. Upon graduation, you'll be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Active Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard. No matter what career you pursue later on business, nursing, law, engineering, you name it your experience in Army ROTC will prove a-valuable asset. Employers look for men and women with the ability to think clearly, solve problems as they arise, and lead others in making business more productive.
