The Wildcat Club auction, Olympiad I, athletic department by raising nearly was a tremendous success for the $43,000. Wildcat Club boosts athletics by Colleen Mewing Sports Editor The Weber State Wildcat Club is a benificial factor in helping to recruit top athletes for our sports programs. With the Wildcat Club donations and fund raisers, WSC is able to give scholarships to athletes who come to our school. The Wildcat Club, which started 20 years ago, had very few members. Today membership has expanded to over 850. Eight years ago Club donations were totalling $20,000 a year. To seek increased team support and financial backing a full-time director, Gary Evans, and an assistant director, Carol Nelson, were hired to head the Club. Donations for the '82-83 year are now expected to reach $400,000. Gary Evans, who jokingly refters to himself as 'resident begger', has brought the program a long way. This is his sixth year as the director. He says that the Club consists of a 12-member board composed of the members themselves. The board helps in deciding on how money can be raised in other ways. Each year the members hold an auction. Carol Nelson said Jthat local store merchants donate items to be put up for bid. She said that $43,000 was raised this year by the auction . There has also been a raffle to give away a new Ford Mustang. Profits from the raffle will be around $30,000. The car was given away last night during the BYUWSC basketball game. The members also sponsor a fashion show which incldes some of the members themselves and some of the coaches' wives modeling in the show. 7 These events add to the money already donated by Club members. But Club members don't go unnoticed. Besides their fund raisers, donations run from $150-$2,000. Some of the benefits include priority seating at games, parking passes, a membership card, Wildcat Club plaque and newsletter, and hospitality room privileges. William Child, a Club member and co-owner of R.C. Willey's furniture store in Syracuse said, "We have a strong booster club. We give the money to the sports programs, not to get benefits ourselves, but to build the school, support the teams and enhance the college program."
