Show Signpost Friday, January 7, 1983 All Lady 'Cats host women's basketball invitational By Becky Langaas Staff Reporter Competition between the in-state schools is always intense, exciting and fun-filled. This weekend the Weber State Lady Wildcat basketball team will host the Copper Classic, an annual tournament featuring the four instate teams. , Action will begin in the Dee Events Center tonight at 6 with the BYU women playing the University of Utah. Immediately following at 8, Weber's Lady 'Cats will take on the Utah State Aggies. The winners of the two Friday games will then be matched in the championship game to be held at 8 p.m. Saturday. The consolation game, consisting of the two defeated teams, will be played at 6 p.m. i This is the sixth annual meeting of the Copper Classic and the second time WSG has hosted it. WSC last hosted it four years ago on Jan. 5-6, 1979. : The Lady 'Cats enter the competition having won the Wyoming Dial Classic and taking consolation honors at the Long Beach Classic. So far this year, WSC is Past coaches to be honored at Jazz game Prior to- the match-up between the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks on January 15, two former WSC coaches will be honored by the WSC Alumni Association. Dick Motta, head coach of the Mavericks, was WSC's head coach from ; 1962-1968. Phil Johnson, the assistant Utah Jazz coach, served as Motta's assistant for three of those years. After Motta left WSC to coach the Chicago Bulls, Johnson took over as head coach. Johnson was later the head coach of the Kansas City Kings. He has been assistant Jazz coach for one year, under head coach Frank Layden. The Jazz will travel tonight to meet the Kansas City Kings, and they will play in Houston on Saturday. The Jazz have beaten the Houston Rockets each of the three times they have played them this season. They have held the Rockets on each oc-cassion to under 100 points. 2-1 against in-state rivals, losing a tough one-pointer to BYU on Provo's home court. WSC defeated Utah at home 72-58 and the Aggies in overtime 90-84 in Logan. "We are looking forward to this Copper Classic with great anticipation. With our record and playing on our court, I'd say we are a favorite in the tournament," said Coach Jane Miner. Carla Taylor, a junior guard and also a team captain, is definitely ready to play. "This is Weber State's year to win the Copper Classic and we want it bad. It'll take a total team effort and that's how we plan to win it." Cindy Stumph, WSC's 6-4 senior, continues to lead in scoring and rebounding, averaging 26.4 points a game and 11.7 rebounds per game. She is ranked 12th in the nation in scoring. Three other 'Cat shooters are averaging in double figures: Sue Crowell with 13.9, Karleen Peart with 13.7, and Carla Taylor with an average of 12 points per game: The Lady 'Cats are presently 8-3 in preseason play and will begin conference action on January 14 against the University of Montana here in Ogden.
