Show A2 Friday, January 7, 1983 Signpost Registrar explains long lines Editors Note: This is an open letter to the students from the Registrar's office. An apology to all students having to make registration transactions this past week. The long slow lines were tedious, to say the least. Knowing why and what to expect in the future is sometimes comforting. Why? The administrative computer underwent a facelift in the middle of December. The conversion from the old DEC 10 to a 2060 took place on the weekend of December 17-20. Why was it done at such an inconvenient time? For a main frame computer that serves as many users as ours, there is no convenient time. Preparation for the conversion has been going on for nearly six months and the computer staff have given it their all, but the "proof of the pudding" is when the switch is thrown. We were happy it worked, but it has taken a few weeks to de-bug. Each day now, we see better response and more promise. In the meantime, it has been an inconvenience to you, as students, as well as to the registration staff. What to expect? The conversion to a 2060 will make it possible to use more efficient software programs. The modifying of old, inefficient programs will be undertaken right away. The registration program should be utilizing a modified, more efficient program by spring registration. As another . means to assure fewer and shorter lines, we have worked out a schedule which will spread the registration period out over a longer period of time. Each class will have at least two days to register. Seniors first, and they will be directed to register by alphabetical groups. The schedule provides for approximately 100 students to register per hour, beginning on the half hour. The spring quarter schedule will explain the procedure in full detail. Keep in mind: . 1. Response time isimproving. 2. Program modification will improve the registration procedure time even more. 3. The DEC 10 was always down (remember?). The 2060 has stayed up beautifully. 4. The registration schedule has been planned to avoid lines. 5. Coordination with other schools will take place so that those schools using our computer system will not be registering the same time we are. We appreciate the patience you have demonstrated. You are kind and good people. This conversion from old registration procedures and old computers to all new systems is a major undertaking, and your patience and understanding have made it much easier for us to make it happen. Registration for Spring Quarter will begin February 22. Please arrange to have your tuition and fees ready then, so you can register according to. your scheduled time period. Keep on smiling and we will do the same. In a meeting of the Weber State governing board held on Dec. 8, Institutional Council members approved changes that will combine the previously separate tenure and promotion review committees. Dr. Robert B. Smith, WSC academic vice president, said, "We have had different review processes going on that were all looking at the same thing. There was a lot of repetitiveness and it was destructive to the morale of the faculty." According to Smith, faculty members at the college have had to prepare numerous presentations for promotion, tenure and other areas. The council's action will eliminate much of that.
