Dean Jones meets students By Clint Wardlow Staff reporter The new Dean of Education at Weber State College discussed his plans for the future of the Education Department with students at an informal brown bag lunch in the faculty lounge of the Education Building Wednesday. Dr. Richard Jones, Dean of Education, told students in the meeting that he would be glad to work with them in solving problems that might arise during the school year. "We can't teach you how to teach," Dr. Jones said, "The best we can do is teach you about teaching." Dr. Jones said the notion of what a teacher is has been changing over the past few years. At one time a teacher was just considered to be at elementary, primary and college levels, but now the teaching field is opening to accept pre-school, gerontology (teaching of old people) and education outside of the classrooms. One issue which students brought before Dr. Jones was the Weber Individualized Learning Kit, a teaching system started at Weber where the education major works through a self -paced teaching program. Dr. Jones said he would like to work with students that have problems with the WILKit, but as a whole he felt it was a good idea, and a boon to training new teachers. Dr. Jones received his bachelors degree in biology and his masters degree in education at Stanford University. He received his doctorate from Berkeley. He has taught at both the high school and college levels.
