Show Page 10 Signpost May 20, 1977 0- At Hill Field Country Club Golfers host conference meet Weber State is a heavy favorite this weekend to capture its sixth straight Big Sky Conference Golf Championship. The Wildcats are hosting the event on Friday and Saturday at the Hill Air Force Base Country Club. This year, golf has been reinstated as a conference sanctioned event after a two season absence. Weber won the Big Sky Golf Title from 1970 up until 1974 when the sport was temporarily discontinued by the " i -V Weber State Golfer -- Mike Gove GRAND sla: by Lynn Arave Big Sky. The only other school to ever win the Big Sky Link title was the University of Montana, which won the trophy from 1964 to 1969. Weber will be competing against Boise State, Idaho State, Montana and Gonzaga in the Tournament. Idaho, Northern Arizona and Montana State are not fielding golf teams this year. 54 holes The Big Sky Golf Meet will include 545 holes of play with 36 scheduled for today and the final 18 holes on Saturday. The first 18 holes begin at 9 a.m. today and the second round will start at 2 p.m. The final 18-hole round will be played Saturday morning at 9:30 p.m. Weber State sophomore Mike Gove, a potential ail-American, is considered by most observers as being the man to beat for the medalist honors. However, Weber's Bob Bradbury, the 1974 Big Sky Golf Medalist, is also in the field. WSC freshmen Matt Cole and Vance Christiansen will also be top participants in the event. The Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy is on the line this weekend with two conference championships being held. Every year, the all-sports trophy is given to the Big Sky School which accumulates the most points from its standings in all seven of the conference sponsored sports. The prestigious represents athletic supremacy in the conference each year. Last year, Weber won its third consecutive all-sports trophy and became only the second school ever to perform that feat. Weber State was the only other school to do so during 1967-1970. With the conference golf meet being staged at Hill Field today and tomorrow and the track meet being held at Bozeman, Montana, the all-sports trophy is up for grabs. Mathematically, seven of the eight conference shcools are still in the running for the trophy. Only Gonzaga has been eliminated. Weber will easily win the golf title, but will be lucky to keep from the cellar spot in track and field. The whole excitement and interest in sports, though is because it is so unpredictable. But, speaking of unpredictability, the Big Sky is taking over that category. Next to Boise, Montana University has the 2nd best shot at the all-sports title-thanks to the Big Sky Officals that is. Montana University was originally supposed to be ineligible for the all-sports trophy because of its using an ineligible player on its basketball team. But now they have been declared eligible again. PREDICTIONS- I pick Boise to win the all-sports title, with Idaho State second, Montana third, Weber fourth, Idaho fifth, NAU sixth, Montana State seventh and Gonzaga last. In conference golf, I favor Weber easily, with Montana in second, Boise in third, Gonzaga in fourth and lastly-Idaho State in fifth place. In the conference track, I predict, Idaho State will win, while Montana will be second, NAU third, Boise fourth, Idaho fifth, Weber sixth and Montana State seventh. SOMEONE ELSE SAID IT-"Defeat is worse than death You have to live with defeat." (B. Musselman, former Minnesota University Basketball Coach. Scharmann is honored A Weber State trackster has been honored for his. academic achievements by a science department at the college. Senior Steve Scharmann has been selected the Outstanding Chemistry Student at the school by chemistry faculty and administration. Scharmann, a distance runner for the Wildcats, earned the honor by carrying a 3.9 grade-point average on a scale of 4.0.
