Folk dancers coming Authentic, traditional folk dances from around the world will be performed at WSC on Tuesday night by the Mayfest Dancers from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. The free, colorful program, to be seen in the FAC Little Theatre at 8 p.m., features native dances from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria, Russia, the Ukraine and Czechoslovakia. In previous years they have also offered dances of the Far East, Polynesia and Africa. This year's program includes Swedish weaving and wedding dances, a traditional Norwegian schottische, a Czechoslovakian polka and a Danish flying dance. Since their founding in 1934 the Mayfest Dancers have developed an extensive collection of authentic hand-made costumes. Their programs provide opportunity for entertainment, cultural renewal and fellowship with a group of personable young people. They perform annually for organizations, schools and churches throughout the Puget Sound area. The 40 dancers (20 couples) are selected each fall by competitive audition. The ensemble has performed twice each at Disneyland and Expo '74 in Spokane, Wash., and in several international festivals in Washington and Oregon. This is the third year that the dancers have undertaken a mjaor performance tour of the east and midwest. Audun Toven, a native of Norway who serves as a professor of foreign languages at PLU, has been the ensemble's director and advisor for the past 10 yearrs. This program is being sponsored by ASWSC; the Sons of Norway Lodge, Ogden ; and the Ogden area Lutheran Churches. |
