This November a 144 hole golf tournament for prospective1 tour members will be held. About 250 golfers are expected! to compete in the Tournament, but only 20 will be selected to make the pro golf tour itself. Acceptance Application Prior to turning professional, Malaska says that one must fill out an acceptance application, but that the majority of those are accepted. It was the first time in about 30 years that an amateur golfer had won that prestigious championship. Malaska began his golf career as a senior at Granite High School in Salt Lake City. A two-year letterman as a pitcher on his high school's baseball team; knee problems forced him to abandon baseball as a senior. So, Mike began golfing. For reservations call 393-0766. 5-25 Contacted by WSC Golf Coach Mac Madsen, Malaska visited the Weber campus and especially liked the business department. He also received a good scholarship. As a freshman at Weber, Malaska placed third in his first collegiate competition even though it was against BYU and Utah. He played behind John Abendroth as a sophomore, but modestly says he "didn't win anything big" that year. In the summer of 1974, though, he won seven amateur golf tournaments. Named as All-American As a junior he was named as an All-American collegiate golfer. Malaska believes that golf is as tough as any other sport. He says, "I think it's one of the toughest sports to really be good at." He stresses that golf is an "emotionally -demanding game" that requires a player to control his temper and emotions to the highest degree. Timing and Practice Golfing is mainly a matter of timing and practice Malaska says. On the average, Malaska says that he spends about 5-6 hours a day on golf courses practicing, but that he enjoys it and just never gets bored of it.
