All of the Big Sky Conference Schools except Gonzaga are entered in this annual two-day meet which begins with a three event schedule on Friday and concludes with the remaining 14 events on Saturday. Last Year's Results Last year in this meet, when it was held at Missoula, Montana, Weber State finished in sixth place with a total of 53 points, while Northern Arizona this year's host team won the team title -with 104.5 points. The University of Montana took second with 102 points, followed by Idaho State 87, Boise State 78 .5 and Idaho was fifth with 57 points. Taking last place was Montana State with 22 points. This year's meet figures to be an almost exact copy of last year's meet as far as the team standings go, although Idaho State could finish much stronger. Three Way Favorites Weber State's Track Coach Chick Hislop says, concerning the Biu Sky Meet: "Based on per formances so far this season, you would almost have to rate Idaho State, Montana and Northern Arizona as three-way favorites in the field. Weber State is not a serious contender for the overall title, although several of our athletes have excellent chances to gain individual conference championships. The conference meets are always interesting and produce numerous surprises; and with this year's added factor of the elevation in Flagstaff taken into consideration, this could be one of the most interesting meets ever." 7,000 Foot Altitude Flagstaff. Arizona is located in the mountains at an elevation of more than 7,000 feet above sea level and thus will not be conducive to fast clockings for distance runners. In effect, schools like Weber State with great distance runners will be hindered somewhat because of the altitude. School Record Holder The Wildcats should score heavily in the 440 yard intermediate hurdles with their all-time top three performers competing in the race. School record holder Clyde Barker has the best time in the conference this year in the one lap hurdles with a 52.2 clocking, while teammates Mark Von Iderstein and Handy Neilson have best times of 53.8 and 55.5 respectively.Freshman Teammate Distance ace Doug Friedli has the second best half-mile time in the Big Sky this year at 1:51.1 and is expected to earn points for WSC along with freshman teammate Hon Hussell (1:53.2) in that event. Other top Weber State entries will be: Lynn Stong in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:13.2), Kevin Coombs in the long jump (23-0) and Larry Hose and Mike Vaughn in the pole vault. No Doubts Idaho State's Track Coach Bob Beeten has no doubts about who he picks to win the Big Sky Conference Track Meet. He recently said; "Everyone should mail their best times and distances to Flagstaff and concede the chajupionship trophy to Northern Arizona so we can save travel expenses." He further proclaimed, "The league has five strong teams, but the defending i hampion Northern Arizona is the class of the league." i f I "1 f: J I j j ' " " w I 'I I fcl F j I i ?!)
