Show Page 7 Mountains Donuts Mundane by Paul Wine A rather enchanting treatise obstructed my sight recently, which I would like to share with and dedicate to, despite its tendency toward the polemic, the ' Society of Weber State Pedants, " and all others of rather verbose inclinations: On Mountains and Other High - Places --- from : Essays in the Mud - . Mountains are rather reminiscent of mountains, if one is aware of all that has gone before. If not, then they aren't. But . then again, if the aforementioned is plucked from context, and ostentatiously displayed above one's roof whether thatched or otherwise one finds oneself rather hard pressed to offer a rational alterntaive. You see, it is all contingent upon the sort of alembic one chooses to choose, depending, of course, on whether or not he decides to exercise his existential perogative at all. This, in turn, is concommitant with the value which he places on all that is enigmatic and holy. If he does indeed yearn after that which is most intrinsic to life and all the "'rest, then he is confronted with two choices (possibly three): spiritial, intellectual, and a nebulous, rather desultory hybred of the two. If of the former, debate of any 'kind is totally irrelevant, and even entirely out of the question. w Beyond this, nothing remains to be relegated to the pristine, save for the metaphysical infra-structure of life itself in which the status of mountains, ridges, .slopes and other more erratic .... terrains is tenuous, to say the , least. If of the latter, even the most fervent partisans of the Theatre of the Mundane will be advised to agree that nothing is left to the imagination, if ' mountains are to be compared r with other mountains (or, for the sake of those less unruly of mind, their antipodes: the despicable valleys and other low places). If of the intellectual, however, one may glean solace and comfort - from the thought that, in any event, nothing is settled. But, all of this is as it should be. 1 As one reliable pundit put it: Life is a doughnut. I find this rather difficult to swallow, however. But. be that as it may, Zarathustra spake thus, and no j one is the wiser for it. Thank you. Support the Signpost advertisers Guest Editorial For a definitive term by LeeAnn Williams It has always been difficult for me to define "discrimination." Like pornography, it's a dirty word that exists somehow in the community values. In my naive days, I thought discrimination was a categorized system that permitted one to refer specifically to a group. For instance, in kindergarten a child chose to stand in either the boy's or girl's line; had either blue or brown eyes; and was either left or right-handed. This hypothesis was further confirmed in the second grade when the teacher divided all the students into three reading groups based on our achievement capability. It seemed this discrimination was a practical, reasonable one. In fourth grade my definition failed me, and I did not understand. I agonized as my friend experienced horrendous internal tribulations because the teacher had given me two more candy hearts than her. The next day she explained to me that her mother had said it was because she was a Catholic. I thought the teacher had miscounted. I didn't realize that discrimination encompassed more malice than classification until I was in junior high school. There I saw the undignified wounds of setting a seventh-grader upon the water fountain. I heard of numerous heads dunked into toilets. A whole generation at that school was taught humility and subservience. I saw peer Band needs YOU! I determined there were basic inalienable rights that ought to be respected for each individual; each person was human regardless of their talents, individuality and idiosyncracies. In my history classes discrimination was depicted in a larger scale on the screen. We saw movies of the Klu Klux Klan from the South; we saw movies of Hitler's mistreatment of the Jews. Discrimination included a suffering that could grow into a type of martyrdom. It meant perserverance for a legitimate principle. Discrimination. In each society the values and practices are different. It exists in one form one day and another form the next. It can be for the rich or poor; it can be a question of ethics, religion or race. It can be sex discrimination. It is defined by the dictionary as making "a distinction in favor of or against one person or thing as compared with others." It appears that discrimination is dependent upon the side of the judgement that is made; discrimination is usually thought of as negative. It is an elusive, damaging attitude that is hard to define, but easy to locate. It can manifest in a smile, a gait, a tone. For me, the definition of discrimination is as evasive as an impression. are available. "Join the fun and help us build a fine tradition," said Threlkeld.
