With this in mind freshmen recruiting received great emphasis and twenty-five former high school stars will join the Wildcat varsity. Sixteen of the freshmen gridders are from local Utah high schools and most of them represent schools in the Weber and Davis County areas. Outstanding future prospects from in-state and out of state are included in the group. Almost every position on the Weber State squad is up for grabs this fall and the freshmen will have an opportunity to make a bid for a starting assignment. It is doubtful that many frosh will earn a starting job, but they certainly will be major factors in the depth and future of the Wildcat team. Utah freshmen who are members of the Cat team are, Gil Anderson (American Fork), Nathan Atwood (Davis), Dean Corbridge (Layton), Kirk Dickamore (Weber), Mark Etherington (Payson), John Fox (Weber), Larry Frazier. (Davis), Brad Hawkins (Bonneville), Mark Hodson (Weber), Kim Diler (Jordan), Blaine Palmer (Clearfield), Jeff Preston (Springville), Lance Redd (Ogden), Les Smith (Box Elder), Rick Strebel (Bonneville), Keith Wilkinson (Weber). Wifh Your Children Do you communicate with your children? Do you have family activities where you and your children can share in fun and excitement and then talk about it? The Weber State athletic department invites you to spend 15 hours this fall with your children in an exhilerating activity. Bring your kids to all six Weber Statehome football games. You can spend a couple of hours each Saturday with your children and give them something to look forward to each week with their Dad or Mom or both. One adult and three children (high school age and under) can see a Weber State football game for only five dollars. That's not much for an activity with the kids. Six Exciting Home Games Weber State's toughest and most exciting home schedule is set for Wildcat Stadium this fall. And the four night games in a row to start the season kickoff at a new time of 7:30 P.M. North Texas State is the first non-conference major college foe to invade Ogden and the September 18 opener against the tough Texans might provide a new record crowd for the stadium. 82 Hopefuls; Wildcats Score High Largest Ever The largest number of varsity candidates to ever turn out for fall football at Weber State College began drills August 27. Eighty-two names were listed on the opening day roster and there were two or three late arrivals who also reported for practice. The roster includes twenty-one lettermen, twenty-five transfers, twenty-five freshmen and eleven other prospects. The reason for the large turnout is the new freshman eligibility rule which allows frosh players to participate on the varsity team in the Big Sky Conference and in the college division. The Wildcat sqaud is young and many positions are wide open for newcomers to step into. Most of the returning lettermen were speciality team members and only five are returning starters, so the freshman and junior college transfers have a good opportunity to nail down a starting assignment. Included in the group of transfers are two players from Hiram Scott College, and one from Parsons College. Both schools dropped football last year and Alan Staub and Jim Nichols from Hiram Scott, plus Pat Oliverio from Parsons are eligible to compete at Weber this fall. The roster of eighty-two candidates is expected to be trimmed down to sixty-five before the first game as injury, and drop-outs, take it's toll. Weber State football teams rank high among college division football teams in scoring over the last five years according to statistics released by the National Collegiate Sports Services. The Wildcats have scored an average of twenty-eight points per game to rank eighteenth in the nation. Weber's wide open brand of football which has featured both strong running and passing attacks has accounted for many high scores. The most points scored by a Weber team in the last five years is a 70-7 win over Los Angeles State in 1966, a 60-0 win over Oshkosh State in 1970, and a 56-13 win over Montana State in 1970. Weber's highest score ever came six years ago in 1965 when the Wildcats whipped Portland State 74-6. Weber has scored more than fifty points on seven different occasions in the last six years. The highest scoring team in the nation the last five years is North Dakota State which has averaged 35.4 points per game while rolling up a 43-2-1 record. Emotion-- (from page 2 col. 3) Players on defense will be smaller and quicker. The basic philosophy will be to attack, and go after the ball. Only those players who want to pay the price of hard work and dedication will stay with the team. The Weber State staff is rebuilding with a youth program that should pay off with better football and a continued winning spirit.
