Show Page 14 SdgcbgS Award H SIGNPOST By Clark Taylor It looks like this is the time of the year to be giving out awards, deserved or otherwise, and because of this awarding spirit that has overcome me, I feel that their are some groups and individuals who deserve some credit for their achievements in the field of sports. FOOTBALL To those fantastic fans of football who yawned their way through the homecoming game with Idaho State, and because of their enthusiastic support the team, (which team I leave up to you), we give each a years supply of Geritol and 2 tickets to the Lawrence Welk Show. That is if they can stand the nerve - racking excitement of watching Bobby and Mary Lou tap dance to the Wildcat Flight Song. And least we forget the fantastic performance put on by those inspired football player from Weber during that game, (Idaho State beat us even though we were minus 13 black players), we are sending each member a memorable recording from the movie "Knut Rockne" with Pat O'Brien telling Ronald Regan "That the team would go out and win one for the Old Gips-" (With what it has done for Ronald Regan we should be in the Super Bowl next year.) Oh yes, those wonderful cheerleaders, who once again proved that nothing kills a crowd faster than a bunch of clowns being chased by some freak dressed up like a sex-straved mountain lion. For these fine folks we are importing a real wildcat for next year, and when the new Waldo the Wildcat does his "thing" we will all know that cheerleading is dead on this campus. The University of Montana receives the Big Sky Consistency Award, for going undefeated in Big Sky football play and then being demolished by North Dakota in a bowl game and thus proving that the Big Sky Conference stands second to no one. (More than likely about 15th next to someone.) BASKETBALL To coach Phil Johnson we give the best-dressed coach of the season award. Which only goes to prove that sometimes our team wasn't the flashiest thing on the court. For all those great and knowledgeable basketball fans, here at Webert who shouted with glee when they found out coach Johnson's Wildcats would get another chance to show those creepy clods from Long Beach State that the Purple and White were in a class all of their own. Well Weber certainly proved those morons from the west coast weren't in the same class as we were. Yes for you fans we dedicate the title of a new book. "The Greatest Basketball Fans in the World, North of the Weber River and East of Harrison ' Blvd." (It's very easy reading, all 13 words.) To Willie Sojourner goes the Educational Relevancy Award. Willie gets this award for proving that a college education is really relevant. For his 4 years a Weber State Willie has signed a contract with a company back in Virginia for $440,000. Not bad for the average college student. The Utah Stars receive a Utah Code of Sports Ethics for their horrible performance last season. They broke a long standing law here in Utah, which states that when you have a team loaded with talent you never win the games that count. The Stars did make some valiant efforts to lose to Indiana and Kentucky but anyone from Utah knew their hearts just weren't in the right place. But congratulations must be given to Utah State for keeping up lose or die attitude this year. Remember when everyone was saying the Aggies were the only team in the west that could beat UCLA. Well thanks again Aggies for proving that once more any Utah team, regardless of the odds, can pull defeat out of the jaws of victory. Weber State's new "Wishbone" offense will be unveiled at the Alumni-Varsity spring football game Saturday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Wildcat Stadium. Each fan attending the game, which is sponsored by the Wildcat Club and the Alumni Association, will be served a free turkey barbeque dinner. Bring the family ... have a free dinner and see the game. A team of former Weber gridiron greats will test the new 1971 version of Wildcat football directed by Coach Sarkis Ar-slanain, now in his seventh year at the helm of the WSC program. During the half-time activities, five families will be winners in a drawing for family season general admission passes to the Weber State home football games. Bring the whole family and have more chances for the season passes. There will be other drawings, also. An added entertainment feature will be the two-mile race in which Weber's ace distance runner will attempt to establish a new WSC record. Brian Hansen is within eight seconds of the record. "Died in the Wool" The "died-in-the-wool" pigskin experts will get a chance to see what to expect on the gridiron this fall at Weber State. The nifty and exciting running of quarterback Dale Mager will accent the new "Wishbone" orTexas-triple-option offense. Mager started the last five games of the season last year and finished as the total offense leader. He was second in rushing with 615 yards, good enough for six yards per carry,, .and 644 yards through the air for a total of 1,259 yards. The Streetsboro, Ohio, native scored 10 touchdowns for 60 points, next best in that category. Of the 26 returning lettermen, only five are offensive starters, and three are defensive starters. Mager is , the only backfield starter returning, while split end Randy McDougall, all-conference Clayton Ah Quin, r; .ML, 1 nm ( nil ' 1 J The annual Alumni-Varsity spring football game will be played tomorrow night in the Wildcat Stadium. The game will begin around 7:30 p.m. Admission will include a free turkey barbeque. guard Jim Campasano, and tackle Dave Taylor are back on the offensive line. Jaime Nunez will do the place kicking. Defensively, the Wildcats have tackle Richard Watkins, end Don Ritchey, and linebacker John Smith to anchor down the line, plus an inexperienced corps of newcomers. The defensive style may have a new look with the addition of line coach Dick Gwinn, who played at Oklahoma, now on the WSC staff. Spring Drills In spring drills, the Cats have done some reshuffling among the personnel and have tried to build where the strength is most needed. With the addition of the freshman eligible rule in the Big Sky, a few new faces in the fall could bring about a realignment in the lineups. Old-times expected to be in town to battle the Wildcats include players off the fine Wildcat team over the past seven years. The Alumni appear to be very strong in the offensive backfield, especially at quarterback. Heading the list of former signal callers is Paul Waite, who has written his name on 21 WSC passing records. He was signed by the San Francisco 49'ers. EzraHookano, the little Hawaiian off the 1966 team should see action at the helm of the Alumni offensive unit also. Backfield Joining the backfield will be Steve Schmitz, who saw considerable action as a running back in the final two or three games of the season last year; Anthony "Ace" King, a tailback and track ace from 1965; Gary Bilotti, a tailback from the 1969 squad; and tailback-punter Lyle Johnston. The records for season and career punting averages are still held by Johnston of 46.2 and 42.5 yards per punt respectively. Receivers will include Lynn Christensen from the 1966 team, Thorn Strebel from 1964, and Tom Bokarae from last year. The line should prove a formidable wall against the Varsity attack. Greg McMillan and Pete Nepote, tackles from the 1969 club will add size to the line, while guards Jim McKinnon from 1969, Dan Macfarlane from 1968, 1964's outstanding lineman Gary Rhomer, and last year's all-conference guard Polo Afuvai plug up the middle of the line. Linebackers Mike Kern and Gordon Churchill from 1969, and 1966 defensive back Lee Bunnell will be in the secondary. Defensive end Greg Croshaw, an all-conference performer in 1968, and a 1969 free agent to the Green Bay Packers will play. Craig Hess, who played last year can go at end or tackle. Several other old-timers are expected in town for the game. A number of players who finished their careers at WSC last year are also expected to be in the lineup. GAME Be sure and attend the Alumni football game tomorrow and see what the team will look like for the coming year. 7:30 in the Stadium, be there. fVf DOUBLE DURGGE1S rfiJK POSSELLI'S 35th and Rivsrdal 26th and Monro 32nd and Harriwn |
