Cats Unveil New Offense The 'Wishbone' or Texas 'Y' offense will be unveiled in Ogden this fall when the Weber State Wildcats take the field. This new innovation in offensive football has brought teams like Texas, Notre Dame, and Montana national prominence in recent years. Exciting The wishbone offense features a triple-option series which is very tough to defend. The quarterback is the key figure and has the option of giving the ball to two or three backs, or to run or pass as he manuevers around the end. The wishbone is the most exciting offense in football today. To make this explosive offense go, the offensive line has to be big and strong, the offensive backs need to have size and power. Weber's coaching staff has visited several schools which use the wishbone to gather information on the versatile offense. Coach Sark also spent a couple of days with Ara Parseghian to discuss the philosophy and details of the wishbone. Weber's personnel this fall are suited to this type of offense and fans will witness a power packed offensive which should rack up big points on the scoreboard. The 'Wishbone' offense gets it's name from the formation of the backfield. The four backs form a 'wishbone' or ' Y' with the fullback lining up a yard closer to the quarterback. o o o o M o o o 'Mean Green' Invades Ogden The 'Mean Green' comes by it's name automatically. Those tall, tough, and cantakerous Texans from North Texas State University, are known for their bruising style of football. And it will be a mature Eagle team which will open Weber State's 1971 football season on September 18 in Ogden. Coach Rod Rust has been rebuilding for two years and feels his team is close to expectations. Always a tough and respected member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the North Texas State club had a good spring and Rust said, "this team was clearly hungrier in spring training than last fall and our overall squad effort was encouraging."The Eagles and Wildcats have met only once before and that was two years ago in 1969 when the Texans whipped the Cats 35-13. In that game Weber's pass defense held the great Steve Ramsey to his lowest one game career completions of seven and the lowest yardage output with 85. The leading collegiate passer of all time had a miserable day, but 'Mean Green' runners piled up chunks of yardage to spoil Weber's first trip to the (Mean Green page 2 col. 3) AAager 'Generals' Weber Attack Nifty running Dale Mager is the key figure in Weber State's new 'Wishbone' offense. The senior quarterback, who hails from Streetsboro, Ohio, stamped himself as the area's most exciting quarterback last fall. Mager stepped into a starting role the last six games of the 1970 season and quickly became a household name to Weber State fans. The scampering-Mager totaled 1259 total yards to rank second in the Big Sky Conference in total offense. He is the master of the broken play. Quickness and an elusive running style makes Mager hard to hit and bring down. In the six games he started Mager scored ten touchdowns to place second among Wildcat scoring leaders. He tied for third in Big Sky scoring. Mager played junior college ball at Centerville, Iowa, a school which is ranked in the top ten jaycee lists every year. A good athlete, Mager could be a starter at defensive back and he could be an exciting kickoff or punt return specialist. He also would be a brilliant tailback, but his running and passing talents are best suited to the option offense. The 'heady' general of the Wildcat offense feels that Weber will have an exciting team this fall. The enthusiasm and eagerness of the Cat's young team could carry it to a few upsets this season and Mager just might be the guy to bring the team into title contention. if V Dale Mager |
