Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett The big test for Utah comes this Saturday when they journey jour-ney to Seattle to meet the University Uni-versity of Washington. Coach Curtice is hoping for a dry field. If he gets one in Washington at this time of year he will be lucky. The Huskies have looked plenty good in their last couple of starts and everyone knows of their holding the mighty men of Trov to a tie. That tie could well mean the Rose Bowl or no Rose Bowl for Southern Cal. So if Utah can tuck this one away they will boost the prestige pres-tige of the Skyline Conference sky high. On a dry field I look for them to do just that. The game with Wyoming last week end was a rough one and played under miserable conditions, condi-tions, but the boys had enough to win. This bunch of Cowboys are tough and they have a couple of backs that can do most everything. ev-erything. The Utes came out of the game in good shape and it was the kind of game that will prepare them well for the rocky road ahead. Garth Panter won his fight in Madison Square Garden last Friday night, despite the efforts of Ray Miller, the referee to stop him. Garth as I told you before is a busy workman and had Miller Mill-er let him punch as long as he had one hand free he would have made the Frenchman quit before the tenth round. Langlois was the one guilty of hanging on by holding Garth's hand under his arm, but Miller kept breaking them fast. Panter Pan-ter has a number of offers to fight in the East, but if I were his manager I would be careful to pick the kind of fighter that Garth will look ' good against. Stay away from the cuties. I see where just three American Amer-ican Leaguers made the all-Am-erican team in baseball, and the same held true - in the rookie team named In this week's sporting sport-ing news. People ask me "What about the Yankees". My answer is there is only one Yankees, and they get plenty of help from all sources. But the balance has 9wung to the National League as has been shown in the baseball base-ball writers pick, and the three all star games. You know the American League all-stars were led by the great Casey Stengel. He hasn't been able to master mind one win. About Dressen; I said a couple of weeks ago I didn't think he was setting very solid in Brooklyn. Brook-lyn. He is out. Sure they offered offer-ed him a contract. Breadon did the same thing for Horsby in St. Louis in 1926 but they put a few-clauses few-clauses in the contract that they know the man won't accept. As I said before, they didn't waste any time negotiating with Dress-en, Dress-en, they let him go. "Pee Wee" Reese is still my man for the job. See you next week. Al |
