Show Sfffl TABERNAGLEJ I I Sewi comes from the mUinn in ' j Turkey that the work is progressing-. 1 and the gospel is being aceep'.ed by numbers of people. The mission is in 1 a good condition. j Elder Seymour B. Young-, senior j president of all the. Seventies, has Iven elected at the Irrigation Congress, j lately held in Cheyenne, first vice president for the ensuing' year. j The report of the csllectk-Ds for tlu. ', Maine memorial fund, thus far. .shows ! that about S-t.-'am was collected at the various meetings of the Mormon church ' held for that purpose on duly XMth. Only a fraction of the people who came to the funeral of President Woodruff, Wood-ruff, were able to get into the Tabcr naele. All were patient, however, am awaited the conclusion of the sonic-' sonic-' what lengthy services, aud formed in I file for blocks to witness the funeral cortege. The quarterly conference of the stake of Zion was held in the tabernacle taber-nacle Sunday, September 11. the principal prin-cipal discourse being delivered by Dr. J. E. Talmage. In the course of his remarks ri-of. Talmage asserted that there were those among' them who. as magicians, are using peepstones in imitation im-itation of the power g'iven the priesthood. priest-hood. The high counsel, he said, had declared against such practices, but upon investigation it was learned that some are still practicing the black arts. One such woman had been visited, lie warned the guilty ones to beware, for the evil spirit would tell twenty truths in order to get in one falsehood. The . evil one is no less vigilant now than ever to lead Latter-day Saints into darkness. The church had hcen told that troublous times are near, but they stand ready to meet them. By unanimous vote the authorities of the church were sustained upon presentation of the following declaration declara-tion by Elder C. W. Penrose: ''That we sustain President Lorenzo 8nowr and his associate apostles as the presidency of, and as prophets, seers and revelators to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in ail the world. "Also that we sustain tbe rest of the general authorities of the church as they were sustained at the last general conference." The above created an impression among- gome people that Lorenzo Snow had been elected president of the church, succeeding- the late President Presi-dent Woodruff, which was a mistake. The quorum of apostles, of which he is president, constitutes the presidency and head of the church until a new president is chosen. Bishop W. II. Preston delivered a discourse, in which he urged the priesthood priest-hood to be faithful in the performance of every duty, particularly the priests and teachers, and that the people be stimulated to greater righteousness. Apostle J. W. Taylor said he had but recently returned from Colorado, where with others, they had been preaching the gospel of salvation. The conference report showed that 250 persons had been added to the church by baptism. After a song by the choir the benediction bene-diction was pronounced by Elder Theodore Theo-dore Curtis. After the address by Dr. Talmage, at the afternoon session, Apostle A. O. Woodruff addressed the congregation, expressing the soreness of his heHi't, though he thought as a true son he should not grieve over the loss of his father, lie pointed out the hope of the resurrection, saying that his father had gone home to bis reward, having been advanced to a more exalted position, posi-tion, where the work of the ministry would continue. He expected to meet his father in the body, which would be glorified. Fi ve weeks before his death, in conversation, con-versation, he expressed his loneliness at being almost the last one left of those who had been faithful in the trials of the prophet, and the joy he would experience upon meeting the prophets Joseph, lirighain and John, who would be auxinus to hear of the things on earth. He seemed to have no more fear of death than if he were lyinir down to take a nap. Apostle ! AVoodniff said lie bad never known a man who contained more of tbe spirit : of the Master. If lie had a fault, it was in bein to trusting' and uijsns- i picious. j "I'he ajiostle then diverted to the ". iift of Tong"ues," and rave in his own testimony, tes-timony, saying; tliat wliile a mission- j nry at l'rankfort-on-tbe-Main, he had been able, with the inspiration of God j end hard work, to read the "Pear of Great Price" in the German tongue in ; three weeks. ; After tbe hymn. "God Move in a : Mysterious Way," the benediction wm 1 pronounced by lii'igham Voting. : A letter from a missionary laboring at Newark. Ohio, says: "The e-ospei tf .Tesus Christ is being1 carried from house to house, but I am sorry to my many close their ears against the ' truth. They are seeking an easier way." Elder William D. Dixon of l'avson. ! ITtnh. who is back from a mission to lie southern state, his field of labor ! be:n;T in the Virginia conference, kays the elders are doing a good work in tho south, being- much bet'or reecivad than formerly. |
