A general : order was issued from the war department depart-ment today announcing the death of General Lawton to the army officials, and paying appropriate tribute to hia; worth. General Lawton died a poor man, although al-though but few beyond his circle of intimate friends knew of the small, pecuniary reward that had come to. him from his lifework in behalf of his. country. Therefore some of these friends have thought proper now to. come to the aid of his family, and an. address to the public has been prepared, asking for popular contributions,. : which may be remitted to Adjutant-General Adjutant-General Corbin at Washington, D. C.,, or left with any newspaper. |
